Ok I know it sounds mad but others do it and I want to do it too.
Take my cat (if we get one) caravanning with us.
The OH is softening towards getting a kitten. I really want it to be able to come away with us if we did get one.
Can anyone on here that does this give me some advice please.
When we stayed at Warwick a couple of years ago the couple in the next van had a couple of cats and they stayed in the awning and when they did go outside it was never far from the caravan - they even had a small enclosure so they could wander around outside.
I would be grateful of any help!

I have a house cat that goes with us in the caravan. She only goes out at home on a lead due to having sight in only one eye.... so when away she's very happy to stay in the van... or be outside with us on her lead. We also have two dogs that come too. I'm not too sure how it would work for a cat that isn't a house cat and is used to roaming about. My cat is a Nebulong and the breed is a house cat anyway... to be honest she is more like a dog.
I've not done it, but seen plenty who have, I think I would of liked too myself, but my cats are rescues and older, so I think it's to late for them, but a kitten would be ideal, as it would start at a young age.
I've seen them on leads and harnesses, and inside the van, and in little pens outside, I can't see any problem :)

Adopt a rescue, rescue dogs make great pets, don't support puppy farms.
The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.

I'd suggest extreme caution until you know your cat's character well. Some can be very determined escapers.
A few years back I watched a cat wriggle its way out of a zipped up awning, and then vanish into a nearby field. When I left that site 2 days later the owners were still looking for their cat.
Make sure it's chipped and has a collar with your mobile phone number on, just in case...
There was a young couple who were touring in their campervan last year and they had a dog and cat with them, they didn't have any bother with the cat running off.
Definitely depends on the cat. I tried to keep my two new cats in at night. One was very happy, the other one was a nightmare and got out of a locked cat flap, broke it and moved the computer hard drive that I stood in front of it to stop them getting out. He is part Maine coon and super strong.
When we were out recently the couple across from us had a cat with them. It seemed to be quite happy in the awning or sitting outside, but I think it may have been tethered. They walked it on a lead and harness.
Our dog was fascinatd!!

I have thought about tethering too so that the cat had a free run but without being able to run off. I would train it on a lead and harness from the start so that it got used to wearing one.

I think so long as a cat is ok on a harness you should have no problems. Our cat ( a Bengal ) would almost certainly escape even though she is a housecat as she is so nosy and wants to be in everything.
we have our cat with us now in the van, we have a harness on a long lead, need to really as there are buzzards and badgers foxes about, but she is happy on it.
