We had our 30 year old Sprite serviced a month or so ago after buying and the engineer said we didn't... The gas was fine, he replaced the old pipe but there are no leaks. He said any unflued appliance will give off co but did recommend a smoke detector which I have bought and need to fit. We haven't used the van yet, first trip this weekend.
The van has two burners, a three way fridge and a heater running off the gas. I have bought a halogen oven and read great reviews so am expecting that to get lots of use! But we will certainly use the hob and maybe run the fridge off the gas from time to time.
My cautious side says to install one anyway but I am confused by the engineers advice.
We do have an awning with the van but won't be cooking in there, if that's relevant.Post last edited on 12/08/2013 23:06:17 ------------- Lisa

My logic would run something along the lines of "they don't cost much and they could save my (and my family's) life, why would I not fit one" - so I'd ignore the engineer and buy one :-)

This sums up my train of thought perfectly.
Thank you to all of you! I've really struggled to understand over the past month or so, why the engineer said we didn't need to buy one. I just thought he's supposed to be the expert so there must be reasons behind it. Seems it will remain a mystery unless anyone can shed some more light on it, the reason I quoted about unflued appliances was his only argument as to why there was no point. I even called him again to check and was just told the same. ???
And yes, duh, of course it's a co detector not CO2! My autocorrect thinks it's so smart. :)
Have corrected post.
What's a gas detector btw? New to caravanning and haven't heard of this before! I am picturing 3 newly installed detectors, all in a row!

Thanks Michael, will take a look tomorrow.
I really want to know now WHY he said we didn't need one! Surely it makes no sense to give bad advice, although I suppose we wouldn't be here to point the finger of blame anyway if it was indeed bad advice :shudder:
That's just too grim. :(
I'll be off to buy a detector tomorrow!

I have lived 62 years in a house with gas burning appliances,
I have had caravans for the last 10 years, neither the house or the caravans have had CO alarms fitted and I am still here.
If it makes you feel safer, then buy one, I only hope they are more reliable than smoke alarms, they seem to go off if you just cough near them.
