Our 1983 musketeer has the built in grill but the metal base (the bit the grill pan sits on) is rusted in the middle... Only realised this tonight when I was cleaning it, hopefully in preparation for our first outing this weekend!
So my question is... Can we safely paint this and if so, with what paint? If not would a silicone baking tray liner do the job in hiding the damage and providing a better surface to rest the grill pan on? I am thinking that might be a better and cheaper option, I understand silicone can withstand very high temperatures but obviously we don't want it to start sticking to the rusted metal and making things even worse!

I think you will find that the grill base is made from stainless steel in which case an application of Brasso or any metal cleaner should lift the surface rust. You have to be careful painting areas that get heated due to being inflammable unless you use an appropriate black paint that is used to spray barbecues etc. which is heat and fire resistant.
Thanks tango, will get some brasso tomorrow if I can find it and give that a try. It certainly can't make it any worse than it is! Seems pretty deep, it's just layer upon layer of powder coming off when it's wiped over. :(
Does anyone have any thoughts on the silicone mat used as a liner?
As its the grill (which has flames) I personally would not use a silicone liner or baking paper. These are ok in an oven though. I would try to get some high temperature paint instead as already suggested.
