On my car the trip computer works out the average speed of my journey.
On previous visits to France I've noted that on a mixed tow covering N Roads, D Roads and some dual carriageways the result invariably came to 38mph so Simon (above) isn't far out.
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
How do people go about planning routes where the roads aren't great for caravans?
We live in East Dorset and I looked at the Michelin site hoping it would be clever enough to get us to Longleat without taking us through all the tiny villages with single tracks (i.e Tollard Royal) and avoiding the Zig Zag at Shaftesbury and unfortunately it took us that exact route!
Think we need to take the long way round via Salisbury, but worried we are going to get stuck in Cornwall where we don't know the roads.
Hi i generally allow 55 - 60 mph on motorways and 35 - 45 on normal A roads, and calculate from there, doing this method nearly always gives me +/- 15 mins estimated arrival time. i.e 180 miles typical journey to favourite site is approx 3 hrs 15 mins.
hi frannyvan .buy a philips street atlas of cornwall.isbn 0-540-08328-3 worth every penny . but keep to the yellow roads and look out for height and width signs . take note they do mean what they say . plus know your set up .
have a good trip.
Most of the journeys I undertake with the caravan I have done solo at one time or another over the 53 years I have been a driver.
As a fairly accurate bench mark I reckon that if a journey takes me two hours solo, it's going to take half as long again with the caravan in tow. Also, I usually factor in at least one stop of twenty minutes into this calculation.
Of course all this goes out the window if some walley manages to crash and block my route. This happens with boring regularity..........
if your a member of the caravan club they have a route planner. its pretty accurate and allows for 15 mins breaks every 2 hours.
Have also got a snooper satnav which allows you to put it your Car/Van Length/Width so you avoid any of those nasty single dirt track roads. like the ones in cornwall, I use this in conjunction with the CC Journey planner
I have just done a journey from Home to troutbeck Quoted Journey time 5.50 hours Actual time 5.53 door to door so not bad. But as it has been mentioned before if there's an accident on route then you'll get there when you get there!
