Hi we have recently bought our first (although recently discovered....damp) caravan.
We have insured the van with the Caravan club, but what I need to know is do we need to change or notify our car insurance? It does seem to include towing and choke at the thought of paying the robbing b*****s an admin fee.
Tell them you've had a tow bar fitted also as this is not standard factory fitting. It shouldn't cost any more on the premiums but it covers your backside if they are looking for a "get-out".
------------- Some days you are the dog,
some days you are the tree.
dig out your policy and have a read....often insurers dont consider a towbar a modification....but others do........also be carefull in speaking to them as it will depend on how knowledgeable they are as its not a standard sort of question....policy doc is your best start.
the main reason that they need to know is in the event of an incident then the car insurance will cover any 3rd party liability.....eg say you side swipe someone with the caravan, then the car insurance covers this whislt you are on the road.
I have never been asked to pay extra for having a tow bar, although I do ensure that they are aware of it.
One thing I did discover by a chance query - even though my car insurance covered me for comprehensive in the UK, I only had third party cover when driving on the continent, and I had to pay a further £19 to extend it to comprehensive.
Some insurers may automatically cover EU countries, whilst others (like mine) do not. Check your insurance carefully.
Bertie.
My car insurance is due for renewal soon but the insurance company that I am with now doesn't class a towbar as a modification but my new quote from a different insurer does even though it's cheaper so the best advice is to tell them anyway because if you have to make a claim some insurers will try and find a loophole to avoid paying out so it's best to be on the safe side. I am considering changing my insurance company anyway as when I had a towbar fitted last year I did the right thing and informed them but an asian lady took my call and said they could no longer insure me and cancelled my insurance immediately. I phoned their customer services and make an official complaint but to cut a long story short she only told her boss that I had a 'turbo' fitted and not a 'towbar' . I said since when do you have a turbo fitted at the rear end of the car and advised that their staff need re-training but they did however offer a full apology and continued to insure my vehicle.
