I need to replace both my batteries.
At present neither are vented or boxed and are sited under the bed in their own compartment. The compartment has no top so anything can fall on the terminals. That's unlikely though as the compartment sides reach almost the bottom of the bed. Not ideal I know.

Do new sealed, maintenance free batteries need venting?

Fitting 2 boxes in the space would be very difficult so I plan to fix a top to the compartment. Is that sensible?

Sounds good to me. For extra safety, you could put in some vents like these you will just need a circular hole cut through... make sure there are no gas pipes running underneath first though!!

I'm intrigued as to what outfit you have. The only time I have come across this was in my elderly demountable romahome campervan where the battery had been retro fitted into a locker. Most caravan batteries are housed in their own battery compartment, or like my elderly caravan, outside in the front locker.

My German caravan is factory built with an internal battery with no external venting provision.
The battery is however a GEL type featuring valve regulation so would only vent if there was a battery or charging system fault.

Most modern batteries have a small hole at the top on one side.

A plastic right angled tube goes in here and connects to a clear tube that goes down through the floor and vents the battery outside.

If your battery has such a hole, then it needs to be vented to the outside.
If it doesn't have that hole then it does not need to be vented.

Jax365
Thanks.
It's a Hymer 555 2006 caravan. Originally it wouldn't have any batteries I believe but Lowdens the UK importer must have rewired it to take them I guess. They would have been routed / controlled through the Schaudt Elektroblock charger but that was dead when we bought the van so we had a regular charger / converter put in. I'll work towards getting the Schaudt Elektroblock repaired from: http://www.aandncaravanservices.co.uk/.
Meanwhile I'll buy 2 x 90watt batteries to put in there not least to power the motor mover. I'll cover the compartment as I said.

JTQU As yours but wet battery.

LobeyDosser. Thanks. That's as I understand it to.
