It sounds very much like the non-return valve is not closing properly and allowing hot water to syphon back into your water hog. Try and locate it and if possible open it up, there will likely be a bit of debris in there causing your problem.

 I can't understand why that is happening. I had same problem you first described when we first had our folding camper, there was a little piece of plastic stuck in the valve, removing it solved the problem. Good luck.
