I was happily towing my van along a motorway sticking to 60mph when I found myself stuck behind a middle lane hogger driving at 55mph. No matter what kind of semaphore signals I transmitted she was completely oblivious to my presence and had no intension of moving over . What would you do?

Hopefully a thing of the past with the new rules but I'd have just used the outside lane after having a good look around to make sure no police behind me.

Bad, I know but I undertake when that happens. Sometimes it spurs the fool into realising they should be changing lanes but often, they still carry on regardless.

Have you seen the new proposed laws for police to give on-the-spot fines to middle-lane hoggers, mobile phone users etc? That might help in the long-term...

Nelmo if you had been caught you would have been the one with the points not only that like you said its bad, just think what would happen if some one pulls over to the inside lane, you would have been at fault if some one was killed...stop doing it mate not worth it.

The new rules over hogging the middle lane starts shortly in Scotland and not about time as far as the M8 is concerned.(Glasgow to Edinburgh)

As others have said, drop back & let a truck or coach 'bulldoze' him out of the way. These sort of motorists can act unpredicatably & you should not be risking having to take sudden evasive action while towing.

I can see problems arising with these new laws regarding middle lane hoggers. If Mr or Mrs Plod is going to give on the spot fines I assume photographic evidence is required, if not, how can you defend yourself. I wonder, over what distance do they considered it safe to return back to the inside lane after overtaking before they call you a hogger. If they used a camera from a bridge I doubt if there would be enough distance to prove anything but from a patrol car or one of those sneaky nasty unmarked vehicles they use then yes, I suppose they’ve got you.

The other thing they’re thinking of is clamping down on lane discipline when negotiating a roundabout. I don’t know about your area but our council have no idea when it comes to road markings especially on roundabouts. Even the police don’t seem to understand that a roundabout doesn’t suddenly become a multilane race track when its part of a single lane carriageway.

They can put the fine up as much as they like for using a mobile phone whilst driving because I’m one of those sad people that doesn’t have one, I know I should for emergencies purposes but that is the only reason I would consider having one.

So it looks like the authorities are going to make even more money out of us poor old motorist, --funny how they never seem to catch those idiots in their fancy Range Rovers that hammer down our motorways at 100mph plus. My apologies if you happen to be a law abiding Range Rover owner, but I would still prefer it if you didn’t use the M27 during rush hour thank you very much.

I actually had a police car undertake me recently and he put a digital message up asking me to change lanes....fair enough I thought, BUT do you remember the tv ad years ago about ' the weaver bird ' I had been pulling in, pulling out , pulling in ., pulling out ...... ..and eventually i got fed up so i stayed in the middle lane so I wouldnt get labelled a weaver bird !!!!   ?... nothing is ever straight forward, cut and dried, circumstances sometimes dictate your actions. ( I wasnt towing , and neither was anyone else at the time . ), but I agree the logan 1 described is unacceptable, the driver in front was NOT driving with due care and attention, but obviously oblivious to those around her.

Lol, there are so many drivers completely oblivious to other road users. Terribly worrying really. It is almost as though they are scared to move back to the nearside incase they can't come out again.

I am all for undertaking. Yes, it may be on the wrong side of the law but if caught, I feel I would have a good case to fight it!!

Normally these kind of drivers when you do get passed them all of a sudden speed up to fly pass you and the whole thing starts again a few miles later
