After throwing away our battered and rusty BBQ, l am asking the question do l buy a portable gas BBQ or go for the traditional charcoal BBQ. Which burger, sausage or steak would taste better cooked on gas or charcoal
What are your thoughts

For flavour you need to use a proper charcoal BBQ.
I have a barrel BBQ which is brilliant for grilling but if you close the lid it becomes an oven and cooks amazing joints of beef, pork and whole chicken.

We use neither we prefer to use the disposable BBQ's mainly because there is no cleaning out a BBQ I know so lazy but we are on holiday
Surely disposable BBQ's are charcoal??? Must say we have never used them, but, charcoal is definitely best for flavour and usually the instant lighting stuff is sufficient for what you need when away in the 'van.
My husband is BBQ king, having at one point 8 BBQs
For taste there is nothing to compare to a charcoal BBQ, however it is not always practical to use one and you will get far more use from a gas one. Gas doesn't take so long to start and can be used in less favourable weather without the risk of not getting the fire going. If you get a decent gas one the flavour can be a good substitute.
For our camping trips we have just bought a CADAC as we can use it as a BBQ but get lots of other usage for it too. There was me in the rain cooking breakfast on it the other day, wouldn't do that with a charcoal BBQ. The results were so good I told my hubby I never want bacon cooked in any other way!!!! Hubby will try a paella on it later so we have real versatility.
However we also have a charcoal BBQ which is a kettle style, for the lazy evenings when we want the real thing. We had fab results from a £30 BBQ and I remembered just how well real charcoal tastes. Oh and real charcoal tastes better than briquettes.

Sorry i cant do the link thingy but its a Kettler
So in short we have both for different jobs and we don't rate disposables, too short cooking time and not a real flavour.
PS also have a spit roast at home but that's another story. Hubby BBQ mad and even does it in snow!!!!
Have you thought about a Cobb Here they are a bit pricey but you can cook all sorts on them. The sides don't get hot so can be put on a table. We are on our second one now. We originally were campers and used it when tenting.
I have a gas bbq that I bought from tesco , I think it was about £17.99 .
I then put Laver rock in the bottom and sorted you have gas with the flavour of charcoal.
ok so didn't read the question properly in answer to the question I prefer the charcoal type. Find you get better flavour and with disposable no messy BBQ to clean out
We have 4 bbq's but used to have 6 of the blasted things till I insisted we sorted them out.
My other half seemed to have a fetish with them a few years ago and couldn't stop buying them.
The 4 we have now are the cadac and a cheapy small gas one we use lava rocks with, that sits on camping table when we use it, these 2 go to the caravan with us each time we are away.
The other 2 is a biggish gas one and a traditional charcoal bbq that we use at home.
I would probably be happy to just have the cadac and cheapy gas/lava one, but I did well to wrench 2 out of 6 bbq's from him, I think getting rid of 2 more would tip him over the edge
To get back to the question, if its any help the cadac is great for virtually everything, from a sausage to a biryani from scratch. Our friends have even cooked a full roast dinner including a frozen Yorkshire pudding on theirs, something I haven't tried but maybe will one day!!!!!
My only preference is I prefer beefburgers, chicken, pork etc cooked on the good old fashioned charcoal bbq. Saying that I wouldn't be without the cadac.
My daughter uses the disposable bbq in a tin tray and wouldn't dream of using anything else.
------------- After living in my beloved van in Spain for a number of years, I
We have a cadac and I have to say it's the best caravan accessory I have brought since getting the caravan, connect it up to the external gas point on the van and away you go. Use it to cook everything including roast beef and whole chickens.
------------- Easter - Burford
May - WoodFarm Dorset
June - IOW
Aug - can't decided
October - Yorkshire
Plus many more weekends at every possible chance!
We have both. We have a table top gas barbeque that we have cast iron skillet for so hubby does virtually all the cooking on that, but we also have the Landmann tripod charcoal barbeque which we then use for a camp fire later. They take up loads of room so we wouldn't be able to have both if we didn't have such a big camper.

Impossible.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Have just purchased a gas BBQ. Although we still have the charcoal jobby and charcoal to go in it I doubt it will ever see the light of day again. Gas is so EASY. No messing about, no lighter fluid taste to the food, no wondering is it cooked? Is it all cooked. With gas we BBQ with confidence.
We had woodchips to the bottom tray which adds a smoked BBQ flavour to the food.
We currently BBQ every decent weekend. Sometimes twice. Good products from our butcher add to the experience.
If you want gas then the Cadac is simply the best available. However we like many here are charcoal heads. You simply can't beat the taste when someone cooks with a kettle BBQ who knows what they are doing with it.
We've just bought one of the Weber Jumbo Joe's it's like the old little smokey joe, easy to travel with, low down etc, but is a 47 inch unit which makes it a much more useful size. Much better ventilation at the bottom of the kettle for hotter baking.
We've just come back from our first break with it and did a cherrywood smoked chicken on it on which was out of this world. You just can't Cook BBQ to that standard on a Cadac, good as they are.
