So, bought the new (20 year old) caravan. All looked fine when I bought it. Took it last weekend to try it out, a problem with the water system, but otherwise everything seemed fine. But, just to be sure booked it in for a service, went in today. A few things, nothing i'm too bothered about given its age...........except..........
............. there was a gas leak........
A reminder to me of the importance of a decent check/service! Nearly didnt bother because of the age of van.

That's not that bad you would have smelled it before it blew. A tiny gas leak is nothing to get worked up about
Maybe not, but I'm still glad it got found at service before my wee toddler grandson came with us!
Glad I had mine all checked as well when I bought it - all the gas pipes had to be replaced, as they were perished - the electricity had to be rewired as well - in spite of the seller assuring me that it was ready to go.
Gas should be treated with care at all times. A good habit that I was told of a few moons ago is to keep the cooker burning and turn the gas off at the cylinder until the burner stops, them turn off the cooker. Was also advised to open the cylinder fully then close it a half turn - stops the value from sticking.

I agree that gas can be dangerous but it is not difficult to check for leaks, all it takes is a length of clear plastic pipe, a tee piece, some water and knowing what you are doing.
Anyone with a good knowledge of domestic gas should be able to check caravan gas for leaks.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

You hit the nail on the head! We don't know what we're doing, and I dont know how many caravanners would. i also have never come across anyone who checks their own gas for leaks as a matter of course.
Any one can do a gas check on a caravan, "gas safety registed" plumbers aren't covered to do caravans.
As far as I am aware there isn't a law saying you have to have any qualification to do gas on a caravan.
Do basic checks that anyone can do.
Perished flexi pipes from gas bottle,
Rusty metal pipes ,
I believe you can buy a meter that goes between bottle and van that shows you if it leaks to. ( the pressure drops ).
