Relatively new to caravanning and my major nightmare is my evil satnav,I have ended up bridle paths, farmyards and down the most horrendous steep hills not to mention the mountains it has tried to get me up.Coupled with the fact I'm useless at reversing my van,3point turns never again - why is it that when you start there's not a vehicle, man or beast about however once you have the rear of th van parallel with front of the car, all the traffic from the nearby motorway suddenly gets redirected and converges to your location. The last time I blamed my wife who was out of the car keeping me right, she thought the best place to do this was immediately behind the van out of sight!! She did move and when I did see her she was standing at the front of the car. Bless her!! she will be out of hospital soon.
I was hoping for some advice - I'm travelling from the North East to a site near Pickering,North Yorkshire (Black Bull,Malton Road) heading down the A1. Anyone know the best route from there. Any help will be greatly appreciated . XxX
Surely any normal A road wouldn't be a problem. Provided of course the car is substantial enough for the caravan, and not marginal.
I've never even considered hills on main roads.
Yes as GCMS2012 says caravans are banned on Sutton Bank a section of the A170 between Thirsk and Helmesby so do not try going that way, I personally would suggest if your not familiar with the area you stay on the A1 and exit at the A59 turn, travel to York then turn left onto York northern by-pass and join the A64 to Malton it may be a few miles more but much easier on you and you vehicle.

May I suggest that you make sure that your sat nav settings are set to fastest or quickest route as these settings attempt to stay on main roads & motorways. The Lorry/truck setting only adjusts the estimated journey & arrival time & does not choose a different route
If the setting is on shortest route this will use all the different side roads just to cut 200 yds of the distance'
I also found that if I missed a turn off it was better to retrace your route & take the missed turn, rather than take the redirected route brought up by the sat nav as this again could entail using side roads to get you back on route
Maybe a bit OTT but especially when going somewhere I don't know at all I check the SatNav route in advance against a map, to try and prevent it taking me down silly roads.
