Having seen a tent and gazebo blown away in wind and loads of awnings damaged by the wind why would you contemplate putting an awning up unless you had to use it to sleep in ?? Am really surprised seeing as how windy it is that people are putting them up .
Some people use them for pets to sleep in rather than let a wet or muddy dog into their caravan to make a mess, others use them to store and dry out coats and clothing, some like the comfort of a recliner chair in an heated awning in winter, rather than sitting on a bench seat that is less supportive, others use them as a garage to store their bikes and muddy boots, the list goes on....
Personally we only use ours in the summer months when the weather is fairly good, with only the two of us most of the time, in a reasonably roomy 4 berth caravan, we can easily manage ok without an awning when needs be, and still have space to run a small 'tabletop' freezer and Microwave inside the caravan.
One piece of advice we have often given to anyone looking to buy their first caravan, is always to choose one that would suit your needs, should you not be able to erect your awning. The people we sold our old Coachman to had made the mistake of buying a two berth caravan for a family of 4, thinking that they could always use their awning, they soon discovered other wise and traded up to buy our 4 berth off us, so when we went to buy our present caravan, although only the two of us now at home, we went for a 4 berth to give us more flexibility space wise.

I understand that in normal weather but this is awful wind and I couldn't leave my dog in an awning that may get blown down and cause injury to my pet also no chance of sitting out again due to the winds

Believe it or not, some people actually enjoy the sound of wind and rain, including my OH, as long as hes safe and dry, he finds the pitter-patter and howling wind quite soothing, although I take your point regards the safety of your pets, but likewise some people value their light coloured interiors of their caravan, more than they do their pets comfort, some would fail to see any danger, others would argue that some breeds are more acustomed to living outside anyway, and wouldnt cope with the heating on fairly high.
Im not saying whats right and whats wrong here, everyone has their own opinion, Im just pointing our what I have observed others doing around the campsites.

I like sound of rain and enjoy the awning so know where you are coming from I think I was just surprised due to the devastation on site that anyone would risk it :)
I was surprised too at the people at Upwood caravan park this weekend with awnings up. It gets very windy there at the best of times, I would be too worried about the damage caused in the high winds there this weekend.
We spend most of our time in the awning. Having three kids under three. The caravan has too many cupboards to trap fingers in, taps to turn on and flood toilet, using shower hose. And a fridge to empty. So we basicly use the caravan to sleep in. Although missus sleeps in awning annex because she gets too hot. Our van is going on seasonal pitch next year so will hope awning stays up.

How r u, where is ur van, we have been seasonal for 5 years now best thing we ever did. We are here every week until jan. have been here since Boxing Day been great, relaxing and peaceful.

Caravan awning near our motorhome was totally torn apart 2or 3 weeks back. Our van is being buffeted about night after night, theres no way I'd risk our sturdy safari room even with tie-downs.
I always put up my wee porch awning. Takes 15 minutes, and worth the effort. Somewhere to jock your shoes off, hang to wet towels and jackets, and in the winter keeps your beer cool
