Just been to our new caravan to take all the bits and bobs that we have bought, the fire extinguisher being one of them. could anyone give us any idea how and where to attach it to our coachman amara, I presume it is not advisable to screw it to the outside walls so assume a cupboard would be better. Ideas would be very welcome.

We have our extinguisher fixed inside the first cupboard that is just inside the door of the van. I thought it would be best here as it easily accessible. Our extinguisher came with a mounting bracket making it quite easy to fit.

We also have a fire blanket but that is located in another cupboard on the other side of that van. In my mind it wouldn't be wise to put them both in the same place !

Our fire extinguisher is on a bracket at the side of the cupboard just as you come into the caravan.  However as it tends to work its way out of the braket when travelling we do remove it from the bracket and put it in the veg rack under the sink.

Mine is actually fitted onto the door.
It then can be used in the awning as well when the caravan door is open.

Mine is transported in a cupboard until I get where I'm going, then on the floor by the door for the holiday.

As you come into our van the TV table is on your right. Our extinguisher is fixed to the side wall of the van in that location so that it is beside the door.

I do much the same as Jax except I have two and I keep one at the rear of the caravan close to the bed and one beside the door. I don't fix them down as I may change my mind where I want them. I stow them under the sink when travelling. If I have an awning erected I also have a 2kg extinguisher in there which I keep near to the caravan step. That travels in a 15l fire bucket when not in use.

They should be mounted on your exit, that way if required to be used, you are using them from the outside of the van in and always maintaining your escape route.
Please also be aware extinguishers only have a life span of one year, not saying they wont last longer but legally they should be recharged or replaced yearly! After this they tend to fail!!!

One other thing I would do is when you are replacing them, light a fire in a small metal tray or metal bucket, outside in a safe area, have a shot of your old extinguisher to see how the
fire reacts and to gain experience in the use of an extinguisher. Also good to let the other half have a shot too.
But from experience and as a serving fire fighter of 18 years my advice is get out and get the fire service out!

Regards Tony

really? the last one I bought (about 18 months ago now) had a 3 year replace by date on the base, as have all the previous ones, I would hope that they would be fine before this date.

I'm not sure of any legislation but there is a BS standard that lists requirements. Have a look at BS5306 I think it is part 3) 1996
