Hi, we have bought a caravan, but looks as though we won't be able to take it out until winter time, was just wondering if any other members take their vans out in the winter? Are there any things we should be aware of? Would it be too cold? etc. Thanks.
I've not used my caravan much this year so i'll hopefully be using mine over winter.
Can't really set up and sit in the sun all day but will be using it as a cheap base for exploring the places that I can't get to and back in the same day.
Think water is going to be the worry but you can get thermal covers for the water and ??waste?? or even make you're own. I'm guessing that making sure the waste is pushed way under the caravan will help.
I'll be watching the replies on this post closely ....
PS. I've just got myself a small 500w wall heater for £30 that i'm going to fix to the spare bit of wall above the gas fire so can have that on over winter. Fan heater makes too much noise and cant sleep with the red glow of a hallogen one.

If you check out the search option and put in 'winter' you will find no end of advice.
I would urge you to make full use of the van, winter is a nice time to caravan. You will find many sites open all year, cheaper prices and quieter locations.
There will be very few occasions when I might be put off by the weather. Usually only high winds and extreme snow make me think twice.
Pack some warm clothes, make sure the heating works and enjoy yourself.
John
We've not had much time to use ours so far this year, but plan on doing more caravanning from now right over winter, we have caravanned over winter before and it's really nice, very quite and relaxing, as it gets darker too, it seems more cosy too, if there's snow on the ground we do think before we go, if it's not to heavy or thick we go, same for the wind, but I've found the weather seems more predictable in the winter.
Enjoy yourself xxx

Clever, we used to when we had a smaller van. A little suncamp porch to put wet stuff in but now we've upsized, no, and to be honest, most winter pitches are on hard standing, so not to muddy, we've got a couple of boxes with lids for any wet boots ( we stand the boots upside down ) ect and shove them under the van to keep them out of rain ect.

We caravan most winters especially for New Years Eve, We always try and book all service pitch with hard standing at least if snowing or heavy rain it would be easy to tow van off pitch. We put up a small awning with a 1/2 size mobile gas heater so at nighttime when the wife is watching all the soaps on tv l can be in the awning either on my laptop or messing around with my RC helicopter, nice and cosy in the awning. Our van as the wet heating system so there are no cold spots in the van not like blow air we can set the temperature to a comfortable setting during the night,
Like l said we go for full service pitch and the water is connected directly to van we do have a small inboard tank so if hose pipe freezes at least we have water. When the temperature drops at night l disconnect pipe and leave it in awning. When we have to use the Aqua-roll l bought insulating jacket used for hotwater tank from DIY shop it did the job ok. Waste pipes l make sure that no waste water is trapped otherwise this could freeze.
If you have blue Calor gas bottles change to red the gas will not freeze,
The only point is the weather we where at a site near York for a New Years party and it snowed for a few days on and off my only worry was getting home back to the Chester on the motorway. upto beginning this year l always drove a 4 x 4 now l have a Chrysler 300c Tourer. So l will have to plan carefully where to go this winter, not to far from home l guess.
Enjoy winter caravaning we do

Clever? Tony makes a good point, yes if the temp drops lagging your aqua roll is a must, and we slightly raise the aquaroll off the ground,it's nice in the van in winter, you can do more cosy things, I take a book or a bit of crochet ( im still learning lol) a few games, a few movies, hot chocolate, it's lovely. I think you will enjoy it, it's so different from summer vanning, you really realise how great caravans are.
It's lovely going for a nice walk getting cold and then coming back to your little house on wheels.

We haven't been away much this year but we did go in the feb half term and it was lovely. Our caravan is well insulated and has an onboard water system so that was great, we also used lidded boxes for shoes & wellies. With children it's probably worth considering what you do during the day as it gets dark much earlier, so if you're like me then you will want them tuckered out and ready for bed. This isn't the same issue with summer camping as we tend to be outside of an eveing so don't mind the kids staying up later.
