hi all , i have just brought my first caravan after moving up from a tent and just wondered what sort of pressure you put though the corner steadies ,
ie once they touch down do you give an extra turn or two ?? just don't want to damage anything from not doing correctly .

Yes, once they are down just give them an extra tug. Welcome and enjoy!

#set them down firmly but not lifting the van. It should be levelled first using the jockey wheel for fore/aft and jocks for port/starboard.

The steadies are just wound down to the ground for stability purposes but if your caravan has the pads on each foot then this will help the feet from sinking into the ground. I have the pads fitted but also put a block of wood about 8 inches square by about 2 inches thick underneath the feet which is even better for stability. If you are pitched on a slope then you may have to use all blocks under the one end to enable the steadies to reach the ground but as long as you don't use the steadies as jacks then you will be okay as it can eventually push the caravan floor up in time. Some think that the steadies are fixed to the chassis but they're not, they are actually screwed to the base of the wooden floor if you have a look.

In "firm contact with the ground" is the rule - but not so you are lifting the 'van and NEVER use the steadies to level the 'van!
I read somewhere that Alko say that you should back off the jockey wheel half a turn after the steadies are set - to equalise the pressure all round.

It is also a good idea to put a block of wood under the Jockey Wheel. Makes getting off the pitch a lot easier when the ground is soft.

The quote I remember from someone on this forum was, "All the way to the floor, then one turn more" and it sounds reasonable to me.
You may also find that over time the steadies need a little more tweek as they settle into the hardstanding etc.

Also on soft ground where the main load carrying wheels will sink over time, just back-off and reset the rear steadies from time to time. If you don't the van becomes too supported by the steadies with the risk of body damage.

I have pads fitted on my steadies, I always lower them down till they touch the ground and then give them a quarter of a turn extra. After setting the rest of the van up, with no one inside I just check them again. I have been on some very soft ground recently and have had to readjust as the caravan settles.------------- David

We are very good at not getting the steadies down far enough - Mr Chile does them with the buzzy drill thing and I follow with the conventional leg winder.

Easy peasy - first choose your pitch and put the van where you want it, but a bit further back. Then get your trusty spirit level and put in in the doorway - check side to side level. If it's not use a levelling block (they are called pieces of cheese in our family) and pull forward on to it, chocking the wheel afterwards. (Some reverse on to levelling blocks but this is what the CC told us to do in their Practical Caravanning course). Then unhitch. Now back to the spirit level and check front to back level - use the jockey wheel to do this. When front to back is level, lower the steadies.
I have no idea how to do a twin axle, mind you!!
