Been on the web trying to get insurance. After an hour had a few companies that phoned me.I said i was not buying it till i read the full policy and details. They all covered me for what i wanted except two things.
1.When the caravan is attached to any mechanically propelled vehicle ?
2.If the caravan or part thereof becomes detached from any towing vehicle ?
So..i take 1.to mean,if my van is attached to the car its not insured for fire,a tree falling on it,or any crazy other thing that might happen to it while its attached to the car ?
2.If it comes off and is a write off im not covered ?
I know my car insurance covers only third parties if it comes off but, what the hell do i get ??
I suggest people check their polices for these clauses before they buy because,if you think your pride and joy is covered on the back of the car then i take it it aint.
Are you reading the T&C's fully - what do the actual terms state.
I would suspect there is some wooly wording in the liability section....eg they will not indemnify you for any liability as a result of the caravan becoming detatched from the car.
also the car insurance will cover you for the indemnity in this event....its a legal requirment as a minumum on car insurance, hence the odd wording in a caravan policy, as it doesnt need to be doubly insured.
i would guess that most policies will cover the replacement of the van or whatver level of cover you have in the event of it detatching from the car and/or a tree falling on it whilst in transit. I know mine does.
Jasie..the car insurance only covers a third party ie.the person whos car your van crashes into NOT you.
Ive been advised to go with someone who deals with caravans only, not someome like Zurick who covers a whole list of things..PS the caravan club will cover you member or not you just dont get the discount for being a member and,the the things they cover you for is excellent so,me thinks its them this year..
And what you read in my first post is word for word..
Two of my friends have written off caravans whilst towing, one became detached, the other one didn't. Neither of them had any problem with insurers at all and had quick payouts.
Your car insurance will cover you if the Caravan comes off of the car, I know as this happened to me about 2 months ago. The car insurance said they would pay to repair the car and the Caravan, but my no claims bonus would be affected. As the damage to the Caravan was minimal, (the 13 pin cable had been pulled out of the fuse box) I didn't bother claiming as it cost £55 to fix including a new 13 pin socket.
