You need a card for ITV via Freesat.

To get all the Sky channels you need a 12month subscription and the box will need to be connected to a phone line.

Freesat is free no card required, hence the name.

Freesat from Sky requires a card. Unless a multiroom installation a Sky box does not have to be connect to a phone line, new installs can pay £25 to avoid this and second hand equipment does not need it anyway unless multiroom.

A sky box will only need a card if you want Anglia West, Central SW, Meridian North or Yorkshire East ITV 1 regions which are encrypted the rest are Free to Air (FTA).

A card will give you regional versions of BBC 1 and 2, ITV 1, Ch4 and Five (The latter two adverts only are regional). It will also give about five extra Free to View (FTV) channels, Motors is one. As it costs £25 it's up to you.

Without a card you will get BBC1 London, ITV Central West, BBC2 England and Ch4 and Five England on 101 to 105 and all the other BBC 1 and 2 regions in the 950's with ITV London on 963 anyway in addition to all the other FTA channels.

I have a sky box set up in my van, via an oyster satellite dish, as I said you do not need a card or a phone line, however if you take your card from your box at home, then you'll also get all the sky channels, and to preempt comments on not using your card from home, sky have no way of telling where your card is, I use it all over the UK and Europe with no problems at all

I purchased a Freesat card from Sky, paid £20 or so and it made no difference, the channels were the same as they were without. I don't even get the standard Freeview channels (i.e. Yesterday, Dave etc.). Waste of money.

You can pay sky a fee of i think £20 and you will not need a phone line. I did this in my previous house when i could not have phone line installed. (renting)

I bought an old sky box from a local car boot + the dish £35, the box had the card in & have installed it inside my conservatory , I get most of the basic channels + a few others.I can use it in the van when on mains but I have a portable set-up with dish 12/240v etc I purchased from Maplins a few years ago for £59, Aldi sell them now and again. If i dont have hook-up i can use it on 12 v along with my solar panel, which has been widely discussed on this forum.
