Just arrived back today after a very wet couple of weeks and having had major car troubles - on the back of a recovery truck - hey ho!

We're with CC Mayday (Green flag) and were shocked to learn that our three dogs would only be allowed in the recovery truck at the drivers discretion - the alternative offered to us was they traveled in our car, alone, on the back of the breakdown truck - unacceptable to us and very scary for the dogs!

Maybe we should have asked the question before signing up but it honestly never occurred to us that the dogs would be a problem.

Fortunately we were travelling with friends who let me travel in their vehicle with the dogs while OH made his way home in the cab of the breakdown truck.

Needless to say we are now looking for a recovery company who will take the dogs IN THE CAB - any advice??

We are with Brittania Rescue and broke down in our Escort Cabriolet about 10 years ago, our dog being 2 years old then and sat on the back seat of the convertible.

We broke down, late one Sunday evening, and contacted Brittania Rescue, the truck arrived and said that the alternator was duff.

We opted for recovery home.

At this point we were shocked to hear the Mechanic say that the dog wasn't coming in the cab. - I was absolutely flabbergasted .... what did he suggest then, I asked?

He suggested leaving the dog in the back of the Convertible car on the back of the truck - all the way home!!!!!!!!!!

Now, anyone who owns dogs will know that they generally want to be with their owners - they will see the owner in the cab up front and panic ...... our dog would have ripped a hole in the roof of the car to get to us!!

I spoke to Brittania who acknowledged that it is at the Truck owners discretion whether to carry dogs/pets.

If I were Brittania I would make it a condition of service - or they lose the franchise, end of.

Anyway, Brittania suggested that we tie the dog up at a lampost and return in the other family car to pick her up later ....... WHAT!?!?

Oh, Briattania said, leave your daughter (12 years old) with the dog so the dog wasn't alone ...... WHAT!?!?

After me getting really forceful, and the recovery driver itching to get going, they finally agreed to do something amazing ....... they called a Taxi, YES, a Taxi - for the dog!!!!!!!!!

The Taxi arrived and the driver loved dogs, he picked up my daughter and dog and drove home ahead of the recovery truck (which was obviously slower) ...... all the way home we went, dog in a Taxi!!

Needless to say the recovery truck man didn't get a tip off me .... even though he was being 'really' nice in the cab in a feeble attempt to gain a payment (which he would have got had he not been such a wuss!)

So, yes, if you own a dog - think, ask, and act before you are stranded and your dog has to stay tied up at the side of the road to await your return.

It's very unsatisfactory.

Well, MrRee, I must say I am impressed with your handling of the situation. I'm pretty sure I would have flipped my lid at even one of those suggested resolutions...

Some people are allergic or afraid of dogs, its not a condition of employment that they have to get close up and personal with them, they are rescue truck operatives, not Kennel maids, and as much as i love dogs and have two of my own, i completely understand if someone doesnt want them enclosed in a confined space such as a truck cab with them.

Likewise not all taxi drivers will take pets into their cars, the only sure way of getting home in such a situation would be via public transport such as bus and rail.

But, the point is, that people travel with their dogs/pets ...... a Recovery Service should also ensure that pets can be recovered as well as the humans - surely?

I really don't see the problem with this.  They are dogs.  If the dogs are left where they usually travel they would be fine.

You can't really blame the recovery driver for not wanting 3 dogs in the cab with him.  There are many scenarios to consider.

Not everyone takes good care of their dogs, what if the dogs are dirty or smelly?

What if the dogs are not properly toilet trained?

What if the owners do not properly restrain the dogs while in the cab?

What if the dogs have fleas and they leave eggs in the cab and the next dog that goes in it picks them up?

Unrestrained dogs in the cab is a risk to safety.

How would a non dog owner feel if they were recovered in a lorry with a cab covered in dog hair?

I am with Scarletsfan on this. Not everyone is a dog lover. Some dogs are dangerous. Some dogs are messy. If you travel with dogs (which we do) it's your problem. Leave them in the recovered vehicle. The dog is used to being there. It contains the right smells etc. Can't see a problem with that really.

And what solution would you propose if the dog is being carried in an open top car - maybe even one without a roof at all to put up?

We were recovered last Saturday and our dog stayed in the car on the truck no problem.

The last time my old campervan was towed home my dog just stayed in it, on his bed. He was fine. Can't see a problem with it.

I think he actually preferred that to coming in the recovery truck with me.

That would be your problem MrRee. You chose to take your dog in a car without a roof. Not wise in my opinion but it's your dog, your car, your life.

If I was your insurer no doubt my terms & conditions would set out clearly what I would recover in the event of a breakdown. I trust you read them carefully.

Leave the dog in teh vehicle and ensure it is adequately restrained.  That or make other arrangements to get the dog home.

Hi, I think I would be a Victor Meldrew with the suggestions leave the dog by road side, or with the daughter there as well, stupid suggestions, (You Can Not Be Serious).

Agree with scarletsfan and millermicm’s posts about the transport of dogs, and I have seen dogs in open top cars and they were quite happy there, as their owners drove along the road at high speed (at least the dog has a fur coat).

Sorry but if I where the recovery company there would be no way I would shell out for a taxi to take the dog home, the dog would travel in the recovered car on the truck or you make your own arrangements at your expense, The taxi fare (s) if this becomes the norm, will inevitably lead to higher premiums for all. If you were that concerned about the dog being on its own you could sit with it in your car on the back of the truck, and before I get my head bit off, I am a dog lover, my Grandfather bread dogs, and he always said you treat a dog as a dog and not as a human.
