Hi I had bought one from Aldi last year tried it on site no luck, today I tried it again at home and got it working,I think once you get it going you do have an idea of what to do next time, well thats what i am hoping for when we go away on friday.
It depends where you are going to caravan and how much you want to pay. For travel across the UK and to the middle of France you need a 60cm dish. For ease of packing get one with a foldable boom arm. Buy the best Freesat box available - a Humax - or a second hand Sky box. Both of these update automatically so you are not left with missing channels when stations move to different transponders.
The cheap Aldi, Lidl outfits are OK, but not a patch on the above for ease of use.
We have A 78 cm twin lnb satellite kit from a company called net gadgets so we take our sky plus box with us and record anything we want to watch so we can watch at our leisure. We've used it here and in France but you can get smaller dish kits for uk only and single lnb for general sky.
For coverage all over France, go for an 80cm Solid Aluminium Dish, even on campsites with lots of tree shade you will still be able to pick up a signal in most cases.
We have have just upgraded from a std Sky box, to a Humax Foxsat 320gb PVR, so that we can pause live tv and record stuff.
But more importantly, should we not be able to find a satellite signal, the Humax will let us watch previousley recorded tv programs that have been stored on the Hard Drive. and will hold 200 hours of standard def recordings.
It's a handy feature and somthing that Sky+ won't let you do, unless the receiver is getting a satellite signal..
Also the Humax PVR will let you run the box of a single satellite feed, as it has an LNB loop through facility, it does restrict your recording choices slighty, but will still work like a PVR.
i can watch previous recorded tv , on my DVD recorder , i dont need a humax , or i can record on DVD and take them with me , or i can play films on my laptop through the tv , with a gadget i paid about £12 for
We have one for sale....its the 60cm dish so it can be used further noth in Scotland etc....It has a tripod cable and satalite finder included....Just gone onto virgin so our skybox and card are no longer valid
