Who doesn't take a tv away with them ? we don't I am amazed how people will tow a caravan to some of the most scenic and tranquil areas of the country only to spend ages faffing about trying to get a signal so that they can spend hours inside the van or awning watching the the box I can't think of anything that I would miss on the tv I don't watch sport so the Olympics will pass me bye I don't need any news of world affairs etc yes I know I'm in the minority but for us caravanning is an escape from the normal day to day life at home/ work

It's your escape from home... For others their home life is different from yours. For some, who work shifts, or long hours, having a tv in the van is the way they like to spend their holidays! Some who travel alone, like them around for company (you mention 'us' rather than you, so I'm assuming you have human company!)

My relations always take their TV, they both work long hours and 12-hour shifts. Their idea of holiday is relaxing, gentle strolls - and watching catch up tv!

Others need a tv to amuse the kids on rainy days.

I sometimes take mine, other times, not. Depends on what I have planned and how long I'm going for.

JMHO Each to their own I say.

I suppose it's why some people don't get caravanning, we are all different, different strokes for different folks, we take a tv, don't always watch it, but sometimes, when we are in bed and the rains beating down on the caravan roof, we will watch a DVD , but still read a book go for walks enjoy the scenery. But it's nice to get cosy in the evening a watch a movie.

To really be at one with wild places you should be curled up under a hedge and rub 2 sticks together to make a fire.

You are looking at it the wrong way. Caravanning is about being able to transport your home lifestyle to wherever you want to spend your holiday, those who don't take a TV with them probably don't watch TV much at home either. Those who are TV addicts are happy not to miss their favourite programmes when they go caravanning.

You also may well find that while some family members are watching TV others are 'escaping' outside, each to his own is what family caravanning should be about.

Each to their own I suppose.

Getting a signal and setting up the TV takes about 2 mins tops.  It's there then if we want it.  Also you don't have to spend hours at at time watching the thing.  I don't watch much TV at home, but I do spend quite abit of time on the internet so sites with wifi are a bonus.

Also, it is possible to admire the scenery from inside the caravan when the ads are on.

We take ours just in case we have a rainy day and then it's great for the kids. Also after the kids have gone to bed at night, we watch it a bit but not as much as at home.

Really depends upon the weather.

We had an older caravan for 6 years without any TV or radio and had to take a portable radio cassette player whenever we went on electric hook up. Our small portable TV took up too much space to carry and having only a very small caravan the storage capacity was rather limited plus it meant transporting a pole aerial as well as the omni-directional roof aerials in weren't fitted as standard back in 1992. Our caravan we have now does have a roof aerial so we decided to buy a 16" 'Freeview' TV with DVD player combined back in February only to find out recently that we couldn't get a signal due to some moron cutting the coax cable and glueing the base to the dish. Now to replace the Status omni-directional aerial and power pack doesn't actually come cheap but then you have a dilemma on your hands whereby you have spent nearly £100 on a telly that you can't use and the amount of time that we will watch it is it worth another £100 to get it functional again? I have just completed the task of the re-installing the aerial and also connected up the FM radio to the power pack too so on any days when we have bad weather at least we have some entertainment to keep us occupied. I'm not exactly a lover of TV when I'm at home so I'm not going to spend more time watching it when I'm away, but the TV is there solely for something to do in the evenings unless we have invited company which in my view is far more interesting than watching TV any day.

Each to their own and who is anyone else to judge anothers decision. Just get away in your caravan or tent and enjoy yourself and don't worry about how others spend their time.

Cheers ratty

+1. I'm always puzzled by these "this is what I do, why don't you do the same" posts.

I take it because i'm really sad and can't miss Eastenders
But then I have 4 kids and don't think its legal to leave them to fend for themselves while I get with nature, and my Hubby works shifts so can't always be with us

Jax 365 and Murano totally agree with you.....

We have ours fitted on a bracket and always tune it in regardless if we put it on or not. Sometimes catch up with news or watch a film if raining, other times we just go for walks, drives and enjoy the tranquility of being away and relaxing. Sometimes putting your feet up and waching a film whilst away is just as enjoyable, especially when we dont hardly get time at home to watch much television.
