We are travelling down to Looe in a few weeks and I will be setting off at 4am after my shift has finished (yes 4am). is there any where to park up to have a bit of a sleep after Exeter.
I don't know which part of Yorkshire you are, but to set off after finishing a shift at 4am, and then expecting to get that far before rest, is absurd.(Leeds to Looe 341 miles for example.)
Do yourself a favour, and stop for a break around Gloucestershire which is about half way. You owe it to yourself, and the safety of other motorists.
If, like me, you were a professional driver, then you wouldn't think twice about wanting to get to Exeter before stopping.
By the way. Exeter to Looe is 62 miles.

hi there is a nice site in Gloucestershire..called hogsdown. easy to get to about 5 mins from m5....i use it when towing. from devon to lancashire..its about half way

My first stop would be the nearest brain surgeon,to drive all that way after a shift at work is IMO MADNESS.
Hopwood Park Services at Tamworth is always our first stop on the way down to Cornwall from Sheffield. Big carpark, nice toilets, dog walk, shop, cafes, fast food etc.

Last Summer i travelled down to Newquay from Sheffield. We set off approx 3am and stopped around Bristol at approx 8am on the M5.
All i will say is the services were rammed with caravaners who all had the same idea, or had travelled the night before and were asleep in their cars.
my suggestion would be a stop after approx 3 hours somewhere between Birmingham and Bristol. If you're going the M1, M42 & M5 route the the first services as you get onto the M5.
The M5 is by far the longest road on the world (160 miles) so a stop is a must if you want to arrive safely.
Then make a second stop at the end of the M5, as you enter the A30. Again this is a long and laborious road.
Most services will allow you to stop for up to 2 hours without charge but i have seen people sleeping in cars/vans over night and nothing is said. Pull into the HGV parking and have a well deserved rest
PS, i also think you are crazy for going straight after a shift :)
It depends what you're looking for, if you want a proper site, you have one just off J11 called Briarfields, leave M5 at J11 southbound and turn left towards Cheltenham, go to next roundabout & take first exit, site is just along there on the left.
Another which I don't recall the nmae of is just off J13. Leave M5 southbound & turn right, go to roundabout on A38 & turn left. Pass filing statin on left & site entrance is on left just before traffic lights.
If you want a motorway service area in gloucestershire then you have the choice of a small one just off J13 southbound, you turn left off the M5 at J13 & it's just along at the next roundabout only about 2 minutes off the M5. There are several laybys there too. Alternatively there's the main Michaelwood services between J13 & J14 heading southbound.
If you choose to go right down to Exeter before stopping you have the Services just off the M5 J29 (i think) I don't like this one because it is right off the motorway at what is a busy junction.
If you're going down the A30 to Looe you'll have a host of laybys to choose from as well as several small service areas.
I'll be driving down from Sheffield to Newton Abbot later in July and will be leaving about 7.30pm
I always try to get the M42 out of thr way, as I absolutely hate that road, I stop at the firt services on the M5 and try to have an hour or so, and then again at the end of the M5 before completing the rest of the journey, breaking it up like this worls for me, I usually arrive at the site about 4am and sleep until the morning in the car park of the site.
this works for me

BTW. There is a lovely sit in cafe just off J27 of the M1 called Ma's at J27.
It's next to the highways agency depot at the top of the sliproad. I've been going there for 10 years as a driver, and is open from 6am to 1.30pm weekdays, and 6am to 10.30 am Saturdays.
You can't miss it as it's bright yellow.
