Returning home from Stratford on Avon after a nice but muddy weekend. It was chucking it down when we got on the M40. Entering the motorway from slip road looking in my mirror - signalling - loads of road spray, lane appeared clear made my manoeuvre then blasted from a car driver behind. The lane appeared clear because he didn't have his lights on. Now if this had been an accident it would have been my fault because I should give way when entering the motorway. Why do people not put their lights on when raining. After that I noticed about 1 in 4 drivers had no lights or sidelights between there an the M42 slip.

I travel regularly around the Midlands/South Wales and Southern England and it annoys me when I see cars and lorries with no lights on when the conditions require them...do they think we have x-ray vision. These drivers are inconsiderate and need to be instructed on the use of "common sense"

This is what the highway code says

226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

[Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

Since 100 metres is the stipulated distance one has to assume that a car can be seen approaching above that distance without headlights.

I think often the problem these days is those damn automatic lights which, on my VW are supposed to come on when light is restricted. I often have to override because they don't come on in conditions as described above and that I deem as needed!!

Maybe that is the problem that these sort of systems are making people lazy and not use their heads to over ride the system as you do.

Mind you no lights is nearly as bad as fog lights in the rain. The key is in the name as to when these lights should be used

I think in bad weather even heavy rain fog lights should be used, I don't think fog lights are only for the fog u just can't name them fog and rain possibly sleat misty drizzle lights can u.

The lights are there for u to see and for people to see u.

Fog lights have a minimum wattage of 21w, the same as a brake light, whereas the average tailight is 5w.

There is nothing more annoying than some pillock driving around with their fog lights on dazzling the driver behind. Even more so when the light is on the dashboard but the are so oblivious to it.

Fog lights are designed for what they are named....fog.

Wish folk would realise that side lights are for parking not for using when it's pelting down with rain.

A vehicle with sidelights on isn't any more visible in bad weather conditions than one with no lights on.

Dipped headlights are what's needed. General rule of thumb - if you need your wipers on you need dipped headlights on.

I agree about the fog lights too, should be switched off if visibility improves.

What I really don't get are the fog lights & sidelights combo - why not just use headlights?

I agree with fog lights being left on but they are not just for when its foggy. They are there so people can see u before they hit u, head lights are good too, more the better in bad weather, as for lights dazzling u, they are not that bright I'm sure u could drive behind some one for miles without fog lights blinding u. It can be annoying but it won't kill u. Every one forgets to turns their indicator, high beam or fog light off now and again.

Head lights on straight away, even if u can see where ur going.

Sorry Mark, afraid I can't agree with this. If you've been in bumper to bumper traffic on the motorway in torrential rain at night you would know that you can be partially blinded by a car in front with rear fog lights on, even if you keep a safe distance.

That said, people driving without headlights on in poor conditions amazes me. As a biker for 30 odd years I always kept my lights on during the day, as most clued-up bikers do. I don't see any reason for not doing this in the car to a degree. A the end of the day, it costs virtually nothing to have you headlights on!

Totally agree with bordercaz - I don't know why people drive with 'parking' lights on, whats the point?! - just put your headlights on!!
