Domestic appliances should never be used on any electric hook up because the power rating are too excessive, that's why camping outlets always sell low wattage electrical items. There is no law saying that you can't use them it's just that they are not recommended because some people will activate too many high consuming items at once which is likely to trip the electric feed to your unit.
I don't know because I don't have a microwave in the caravan and I never will because I detest the taste of the mushy unattractive food that comes out of them. I prefer the conventional oven even if I have to use my gas to have good tasting food on the table. I use one at home about once a week for heating gravy for the Sunday roast but that's about it really. As a comparison, if you heat a Cornish pasty in a microwave and one in a the ordinary oven, the one in the microwave comes out with pastry that is soft and extremely greasy whereas the one out the ordinary oven is brown, crisp and tasty.
There's no problem fitting an ordinary microwave in your van, any microwave will do ,If you fit it in a cupboard ensure it has adequate ventilation. You could carry it loose as a lot of people do and use it on a work surface.
You should be aware that the rating of the M/wave is the output and allow app 50% more for the electrical input, the wattage for the electricity will be on a plate or sticker on the back or side of the M/wave normally.
Don't be tempted to buy one designed for camping they are a ripoff buy the cheapest you are happy with from the likes of Argos or Tesco etc.
The problem with putting any electrical items in the awning is that they are be prone to getting damp which is best avoided as water and electrics are not a good combination by any means. Safety is paramount so I would strongly advise against storing a microwave in the awning as it would be considered a fire risk. Of course if the inevitable happenned and your awning did catch fire due to an electric appliance kept in these typical conditions your insurance would probably refuse to pay out. It's just as bad as taking a barbecue into a tent and we all know what the cosequences of that has been recently.
Your electric steamer can be used in the caravan but you need to read underneath what the output rating is first. You can use high voltage domestic equipment but it's not really advised because people will automatically use other high power items at the same time which can cause the system to trip. If you use the steamer without any other electrical being used simultaneously then you should be okay.
You can get a 600W microwave cheaply enough. It`ll use about 1kw that`s all. So if you`re using other appliances at the same time . . .were you good at mental arithmetic? But I wouldn`t put it in the cupbpoard Betcha it won`t fit anyway. We leave ours in the car. Never used it on last trip . . .
------------- Peripheral people don`t have as much excitement but they sure live longer
We have just got our first caravan and the microwave that originally came with it was missing. Considering buying a small one but wondered about the issue of condensation in the cupboard. Do people find this a problem so long as there is clearance around it?
