Whilst towing home yesterday, the towing lead looped down and was trailing on the ground. As a result the rubber covering and the wires in one of the leads is damaged. We had no left indicator or side lights for the journey home. We have a 13 pin connector on the towbar and 2 leads from the van. Is it possible to have the 2 leads replaced by one when we have the damaged fixed or will we still need to keep 2 leads from the van?
Yes you can retrofit to a single 13pin on the van. Depending on how existing wiring has been made, it might be a bit of a job to replace with a single cable (although that's the route I'd follow regardless), otherwise there are some good 13pin plugs available that are designed to take the two existing cables if necessary.
If you're getting this done for you and the fitter intends to retain/repair the existing pair of cables, make sure he uses a plug specifically for 2 cables, otherwise the two cables together won't provide an adequate seal; the specific plugs have a 'figure 8' grommet to provide a good seal.
