Hi,
We are searching for a new caravan and have found a 2009 swift that is being sold by a local dealer.
The Van has been registered as stolen but we have been told the marker has been removed so it is fully insurable. I believe it will show on the CRIS check?
The dealer says we would recieve a full log book etc.
Has anyone any advice for us please?
Is it safe to buy etc
Thanks

Cannot see a problem if CRIS is checked with the chassis number.

Only buy it once CRiS has confirmed that it is not a stolen vehicle. You don't get a log book for a caravan so if the dealer actually said that you would get one....move on. If it has been stolen then the Delaer should be able to direct you to the Insurers who had it covered who can confirm that the "stolen" issue has been resolved. You don't want the insurers turning up and taking it away.

If you get no joy via that route then don't buy it.

If you still want to buy it then get a letter from the dealers confirming that they have valid title to the caravan and that if it is subsequently found to be a stolen caravan  they will reimburse the monies that you have paid, within seven days of  your written demand for reimbursement, plus £x compensation. Work out your own compensation level for being messed around.

Mind you if they are offering you a log book for a van don't walk away....just run.

Phil

The 'Log book' for cars disappeared years ago when it was renamed 'the registration document' but the names stuck so to my mind can equally be applied in loose way to the CRIS registration document for caravans.

The point is though, whatever you call it, it won't say 'stolen/recovered' on it, however, when the CRIS database is asked, it will throw it up.
The point about that is the van will always have a question mark hanging over it and generally be worth less than if it had never been stolen.
So really all this boils down too is the dealer legit and is the van the right price now?

The first bit you can check by paying the fee and getting a CRIS check done
