I am going to see the following van tomorrow morning. After arranging the viewing (as 5 berth vans in this price range go like absolute hot cakes up here) I then set about doing my pre inspection research via google.

The seller has listed it as a 1992 van but I now have my doubts as the roof has a joining strip up the middle (which no other 1992 swift has as far as I can see).

I am also not sure what model / length it is but think it's a 490.

Any Swift owners out there able to give me a guestimate as t how old the van is?

Comes with full awning and Aklo hitch for £800 so as long as it's damp free I can't really go wrong.

If you're going to see it anyway, check out the chassis plate. It should tell you the age and model.
I'm not a Swift owner and I don't do vans but no-one else has replied.

I'd say that looks like a 1992 van

The built in gas locker and cassette toilet sort of give it away

as long as its not too soggy its priced about right !

It is probably priced right if it's not full of damp, but it's not a 1992 van judging by the one on that auction site, item number 280856295364 . The front windows are different.

I have just done a "google" on the sellers mobile phone number (something I always do when buying off gumtree) and have discovered that the seller has hundreds of ads looking to buy caravans for cash. Looks like he is a small time / private wheeler dealer and must have bought the caravan recently for less than £800.

I think I might now give this one a miss!

Well upto 1994, Swift challengers were creamy white with beige decals, 1996 Challengers then changed to the dark red decals on a white caravan, but having said that, it is of course possible that a caravan of that age has been re-sprayed and had all decals removed.

The best way would be to get the cris reg marks and look them up to see the date the caravan was registered.

Caravans were not universally cris registered until 1993
And before the early 90 s most caravans had a separate gas storage locker bolted onto the front

I'm pretty sure this is a 1989 Swift Challanger 490 or even a 1988 .
Just google 1989 Swift Challanger and have a look at google images .
