Hi All

I am totaly gobsmacked. I rang a man to fix my cassette toilet last week he told me it wouldnt be a problem but didnt know how much it would be. I knew it was the pump and told him this. Also two of my neighbours on site wanted him to look at problems in their vans. Which again he agreed to. He took all my toilet apart and then told me it was the pump. which i knew. He had the part with him and said he would fix it now. went and got part from his van. I kept asking how much eventually he told me £85 which included £40 for the repair and £45 callout charge. I basicly told him to sling his hook. By law they have to tell you up front that there is a callout charge so due to his greed and wanting the callout charge off all 3 of us he never got a penny. as we didnt get it done.  I have now ordered the part off ebay for £14 and am fitting it friday with the step by step guide from thetford website. So be aware when you call anyone out get a price upfront. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sadly it doesn't surprise me. There are some cowboys out there.

This reminds me of 'BBC Watchdog' when viewers are constantly been told to beware of cowboys but not many seem to listen. They come to do jobs without giving a firm quote but it's the best thing you could have done is to tell him to sling his hook.

If the part is £14 then £70 is what about any mobile service person would charge to come to you for min 1hrs labour. His charges are not excessive so hardly a job for watchdog. I would agree he should have made is charges clear tho although without seeing the job he could not have given you a firm price.

Its pretty obvious that any mobile service engineer has got to make a living so he is not going to fix anything for £20. If you are able to diy then why didn't you do that in the first place?

I have to agree with tentze, If you knew it was the pump and you could get it for £14 and the diy instructions from Thetford why not just go that route in the first place and i would have asked if there wasd a call out charge before booking the mobile engineer. Anyone that works from home nearly always have a call out charge... my sons a plumber and always tells people there is a call out charge if someone rings with an emergency call out.

Was he in the mobile caravan engineers?
I haven't used anyone from the guild but have asked for a quote which came back very reasonable.

So lets put htis into perspective. The part was £14 and he spent an hour fixing it and charged you £40 - his vehicle costs are about 50p per mile insurances and various business costs total £85 probably £10/15 excessive but he may have to pay more for the pump. I have to agree with Tentz on this

Being self employed, people have no idea what things cost just to make a profit, He would of had a Van to run, Public Liability insurance, training courses to keep up to date, to name just a few things. Yes should have given a quote I agree. The part might cost more as the person has to order them, or go to collect, none of this is free.

I was talking to a woman at work a few months ago who was having driving lessons and she was moaning about the cost. I asked her what her her husband did for a living. He was a qualified chippy earning 3 x as much as the driving instructor. Both qualified both spending a lot of money on tools for their job why the big price difference.
