I am about to purchase a new caravan and would like one with an island bed. I think we have to stick with a single axis van because of towing. Does anyone have a model they would recommend or suggest steeringclear of? I like the look of the Bailey Senator Virginia.

The problem with island beds is the lack of space either side of them. We looked at several models but finally opted for a fixed bed option

Hi Patc,

We have an island bed, having had 2 fixed beds before. We currently have an Elddis Odyssey 550 MTPLM 1540 kg. Having had 9 caravans this is perfect for us as my wife has MS and it makes getting out of bed for the loo easier.

Any fixed bed has a variety of uses beside sleep-watchin TV, playing board games, after lunch snooze etc. I hope his helps.

If we were going to change our van,  at the moment single twin beds at back. We would go for a island bed than fixed.

If you watch TV in bed have a look at the design and where the tv goes.  Lunar make an island bed single axle model - lexon IS I think, £15850 approx. new.

We have a fixed bed but are now looking for a new van with an island bed. We are limited in our choice because I must have an L shaped lounge. So the dog has her space and is not under our feet

We are looking at the

Lunar Lexon 585 SI

Compass Omega 550 or Ralle 550

2009 models have many many new extras as standard

Bailley have nice ones with an island bed .

Hi there, we have a Bailey Senator Virginia.

I LOVE THIS VAN!!

Our starter van was a double dinette.. in other words we made up a double in the rear and because I was on the outside had hubby climbing over me when he needed the loo(and after a few tinnies this was a lot!!)

Space is tight around the bed more so on one side, but still enough to avoid the climb over!!

I would definately recommend an island bed

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused by some of the posts here!

An island bed is a fixed bed!

Ace is part of the Swift group, and therefore any Ace van/layout will have a near identical sibling badged Swift, Abbey or Sterling.

Thank you for all your comments - much appreciated.
You are correct David, an island bed is indeed fixed but they are classified separately by caravan manufacturers. Fixed beds have one side against a side of the van; island beds only have the headboard attached.

Sorry Pat, but surely a fixed bed is a bed which is always a bed, it isn't designed to be converted to seating.
So whether it's against a side wall or a rear wall, it's still fixed!

I also agree with David, as I said.
If you look at caravan catalogues online or on paper you will find fixed beds and island beds. It is the same if you visit caravan sales sites. The two categories are as I described and considered diffent. Both categories are beds which are permanently beds.
If you object strongly enough, I suggest you contact ALL caravan manufacturers and ask them to change their categories of vans.
Thanks again for all the helpful comments.
Pat

I have just looked at the Swift/Sterling/Abbey/Ace website.  They definately use the term "fixed bed" to refer to any model of bed which is fixed, whether "side" or "island" type.

Other types of fixed bed available are "transverse" and "transverse island" !

Fixed beds, are fixed beds.

"Island" is almost a layout name, because not only does it mean that you can walk around the fixed bed, it instantly describes a particular layout; fixed bed in the middle at the back, side toilet and shower
