When we bought the van the sales
man told us that we had to make sure that water was coming out of the taps before using the heating. Does that mean that we have to be connected to water for the heating to work or does it just apply to heating the water?
Next ,how do you have the tha Alde heating just the water and not heating the van? I assume with just heating the water will mean that the pump on the header tank will not be running.

Perhaps I should add the van is a Lunar Clubman with digital control panel

As Bill Terry said what the sales man told you is wrong. The Compact 3010 does not need water in it before its put on, or used for heating.
To stop the heating working to just heat up the water simply set the "temperature stat" to a value below the van's temperature. The circ pump will not come on but the water will heat up provided its filled and "on".

I have a manual, it is not clear about how to heat water only.
Section 6 Warm water.
"If you want more warm water........."
More than what?
I will follow JTQU`s advice. The salesman told us that the manual is confusing so Alde have produced a quick start sheet which is equally unclear.
I`m sure we will get the hang of it with practice.
With the Truma system we flicked a switch for electric and turned a knob for gas-simples!!

I don't think the manual is confusing, you just need to give yourself a quiet hour in the van to go through it and try the various functions.

Once you have the controller set up to do what you want, you barely need to touch it.

Basically, as long as there is (using) water in the boiler and it is on, it will heat the water without you doing anything else.

The "more warm water" refers to heating the water to a higher temperature, which means, when mixed with the cold water, you get a longer shower. When doing this, the space heating is turned off.

You will get a much faster warm up using gas, and both gas and electricity can be used together if required.

As said above, if you want hot water but not heating, you just set the temperature on the controller to lower than the temperature in the van.

So if it is showing the actual temperature as 20 degrees, you could set it to 18 degrees.

If trying it out when it is cold in the van, say only 10 degrees, then you would need to set it down around 8 degrees.

As you have correctly assumed, the pump is not running if heat is not called for, so the heated water/glycol mix in the boiler is not circulated, hence no space heating.

You may find there is initially some air in the system, if so, you will need to vent the radiators. And then you may need to top up the system. The level when cold should be slightly above MIN.

It's an excellent system once you get used to it. The night set back function is very handy, have it come back to day temperature about an hour before you get up. If running on electricity, when away from the van, leave the heating running but turn the temperature down a bit. That way it does not take ages to warm up again.

Jennifer thanks again for your help.I read up a little about the system before picking up the van.
I noticed that the glycolmix level was well below the min level in fact there was very little in the reservoir. I asked the salesman if the level had been checked and he said "of course it`s fine".
I asked him about venting the system and he told me that I shouldn`t attempt it and take the van back to the dealer for venting.

When I fired my heating up for the first time, after about ten mins the pump started to run slightly noisy, I didn't worry about it, the air cleared it self after an hr's running, once you have got your head round the control of it, you will love Alide heating, I have had the telematric fitted also on my heating, were as you can just send a tx to the van, you can ask the heating to on or off, it then tx's you back comfirming wot you told it to do, on or off, temp, & battery status. Blow heating is the day of the past for us!
If you tell the water heater for more water (Longer shower hot) this is only for 30mins once it has reach the temp. The auto amp rating is very good to, this means if you have a kettle on for ie, the heating will auto knock down to a lower amp rating, so it won't knock your trips off.
I think it will confuse you more Reading the manual without you being in front of the control unit, like Jen said, have a hr with the manual looking at the box one step at a time, if you really mess it up, and can't get anything to run, just reset the control box to undo the cock up, lol good luck, but you won't need it, you will think wot was the panic about.

The sensor it needs to be implemented appears not to come in the standard supply Alde kit, so it would depend on whether your van manufacturer specified it. It is a loop like unit that the mains input cable goes through and is logically sited between the mains entry point and mains consumer unit/RCD. So you should be able to see if it is fitted.
The supporting electronics will be in the normal "electronic" control panel and the sensor is available as a component, so adding it DIY should be easy.[provided your competent to undo and remake the mains cable to slip the sensor on]

Am not sure, may be it is an extra, or it comes with the new vans.

OH DEAR!!!

Does he actually know anything about the Alde System?!

Some useful info here if you need to top up the system...

http://www.alde.co.uk/faq.php

If your handbook does not say where the vents are, then you will need to follow the pies to find them. I would expect there to be one at each front corner, and a couple of others at least. Usually near the ends of rads or at high points, but sometimes hidden in cupboards.

If the level is already low, you better get some antifreeze ready, make sure you get the correct type. In an emergency, it will not harm to top up with plain water, you can add neat antifreeze later. If the level is too low the pump will be whirring in mid air and be noisy, and you will not get proper heating.

Do not be tempted to overfill as when it is running it might overflow. It may take a while to settle down and get all the air out, but once it does you really should not have to top it up at all.

Have fun!!

We're in the same situation trying to understand the Alde system. I can't see where I top-up as all I've got poking out of the wardrobe reservoir is a thin "air" tube and looking down (using a mirror) all we have on top of the reservoir is a shiny flat metal cap with a wire or two, whereas Alde manuals show a large plastic nut with what looks like a pump sticking-out the top of it. Have we got the automatic bleeding system and where do you top-up? Help!
