Hi I've found a sprite Quattro fb (09 model) at a good price but have read about damp issues. The owners live about 1hr 30 mins from the storage so don't want to mess them about. The question is is it worth going to view? The owner is happy for me to bring a damp meter & said it still has 3yrs warranty left on it. Are warranties transferable? He's staying in it not this wkend but next & would be able to show me everything working then. The site is only an hr away from me. What do I do? Do I have a look Sunday & leave a deposit then see everything working the next wkend. Or do I wait till that wkend & risk someone else buying it in the meantime?
At or coming up to 3 year old has it had its 3rd service. If not i would definitely require this was done by swift group dealer,so that you know all is ok before having warranty transferred.I would of thought there is no rush to purchase as not many people will be looking for a twin axle to lug about with fuel prices rising as they are.
ask for a damp report and service records (services not done each year from new the warranty could be void ) or walk away there are lots of dry vans out there.the cost of repairing a damp van could be 1000 s.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
As far as I'm aware no warranty is transferable on any goods that you buy. When a person purchases a product the warranty goes on their name on the day of purchase not actually on the goods. It may be wise to check this out first as the law can change over the years but twice in my life I have known people to buy a nearly new product second hand thinking they had the warranty along with it only to find out afterwards that they legally hadn't. It wasn't a caravan but domestic appliances and after contacting the trading standards they confirmed that no warranty or guarantee is transferable and also found out that if you buy an item with a 12 month guarantee, if the product malfunctions and you return it to the shop for a replacement, the new item only has the remaining time left on the guarantee and not another full 12 months which you might think. So if the seller claims that there is 3 years left on the warranty it may be advisable to check the legal side first as if something does go wrong you need to know if you are legally covered by the transferred warranty or not. If it's what you are looking for then there is no harm in doing all the necessary checks before a purchase and after all it might be a good buy. All I'm saying is find out how you stand with the warranty because once you have parted with your cash you want to know for certain that you are covered by the warranty for a further 3 years.
Hi thanks for getting back to me. He has kept it fully serviced. Regards to the cot I think i would have to purchase the 1 the other poster was on about (can't remember her name) or put something across the front of the 2 day beds & maybe put 1 of those little kiddy blow up beds on the floor inbetween the beds. Ahh decisions decisions eh! Not easy this buying lark is it! Apparently the warranty is non transferable but it's up to date with its services. Need a good chat with hubby tonight me thinks.

I don't want to throw a spanner in the works but as you have a young family I wonder if you might have a post 1997 driving licence which might restrict your choice of caravan.
I am buying a Swift Group van and have been told by Swift that their manufacturers warranty is transferrable but the services must have been conducted in the annual periods specified. I'd give Swift a ring :)
ps I'd ask for copies of the services
edited to add, heres info on Swift site:
The benefit of this Warranty may be transferred to a new owner if the caravan is re-sold, provided that the caravan has been serviced in accordance with the requirements of this handbook, and details of the change of ownership have been supplied to Swift using the change of ownership form set out in this handbook as soon as reasonably practicable after the change.

Thanks jackie that's really helpful.
Jackie could you do me a favour & send me the link to this part of the website. I want to show it to the caravan owner as he claims he checked on there & it said it the warranty is not transferable on any swift caravan?
No problem. I even spoke to them on Thursday (very helpful)
Look at section 4. under conditions
2012 ones

I have a swift group caravan that I bought when it was 8 months old. I transferred the warranty into my name (free) no problem. i have kept the service up to date as per schedule and have had 2 bits of warranty work done without any problem.
Lunar never used to transfer warranties until 2009 - I mention this because when we came to get a bit of warranty work done the lunar dealership disputed it until I provided them with an invoice from lunar for the transfer, so I would definitely get your answer from the horses mouth and speak to swift directly prior to purchase.
Also if you think you really want the van I would leave them a small deposit cheque which they could keep subject to an MCEA caravan engineers survey check out website for your nearest one - I'd highly recommend you do this for the sum of money you will be paying out for the caravan. We paid £100 for ours (we paid extra for a last minute weekend inspection) they are normally £60-£100. I would imagine that for a 2009 model if there is damp then the seller most probably wouldn't be aware of it anyhow.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
