Scotland may have to establish passport controls at the English border if it votes for independence, says the UK’s Europe minister, David Lidington.

He said Scotland would not necessarily inherit the UK’s opt-out of the Schengen Agreement which permits freedom of movement around most of Europe.

The opt-out means EU citizens remain subject to passport checks at UK borders.

Mr Lidington visited the Scottish Parliament yesterday to discuss developments in the eurozone with MSPs.

It will probably have a knock on effect with both the Scottish and English tourism industry but they won't be able to tell really until about 3 years later to see if there has been any decrease in visitors either way. A percentage of both countries maybe reliant on income from the leisure industry so the farmers and landowners may well be affected. If it does then it could result in yet another increase in pitch fees.

The UK's opt out of Shengen is not working. Countries with land borders require residents to have indentity cards & paperwork to prove that they are legally in that country. The UK relies on an 'island fortress' which clearly in this day & age of international travel does not work.
