Just picked up the van and want to heat it on electric from home. Heated it with gas but now I want to be sure that with the hot water system drained down that I can still use the electric to heat the aldi system up without damaging the hot water system. ie put the electric system symbol on with the water system symbol off? Hope I've explained it well enough!
Hi yes you can use the alde heating without any water connected to the caravan system The hot water works by a jacket surrounding the heating element So it doesn,t matter if there is no water there
However make sure you empty the water system (ours has a yellow valve by the boiler) and if you have an onboard tank make sure thats empty too
Hi yes I have been using my Aldi heating at home during these sub zero nights we have been getting over last few days. I have set the temperature low in the evening and turning off in the morning, It is keeping the inside of the van just right.
You mentioned the 'water symbol', the little tap icon.
Note that this does not need to be 'on' to get hot water, you get hot water automatically when ever the boiler is 'on' and charged full of fresh water.
That tap icon is to boost the water temperature for a 30 minute period from the normal thermostat controlled 50 C to nominally 65C. BUT during that 30 minute period to get that extra heat into the fresh water it inhibits the heating circulation pump from running, so there is no space heating available.
I have not used this feature as I know the extra temperature causes much of the calcium to come out of the fresh water's 'hardness', so using it will inevitably cause an increase in 'furring up'.
If you have not got the Alde instruction manual it is downloadable via the Alde UK's website. The system warrants investing some time in getting your head around how to operate it, particularly how to set up the day night timings and temperatures.
As you have been correctly told this system can safety be operated when not filled with fresh water, though must always even if not run be filled with inhibited/antifreeze water solution, that's within the serviceable life of the selected product.[typically two years for normal blue/green antifreezes, 5 for orange/red types where the colours conform to the generally accepted industry convention. If you change from one type of inhibitor'antifreeze to the other the system really should be flushed through as these products are not compatible with each other]
