Just starting caravanning and want to know what people consider the basic essentials are? Getting a new caravan in February and have a list as long as my arm of potential things I might need . We have come from trailer tenting so already have alot of the smaller stuff.
My esential list includes
Wheel lock and hitch lock, gas cylinder, aqua roll and wastemaster, awning, toliet fluids etc, leveling ramps, wing mirrors
tango - hmmm Noseweight gauge...did think about putting that on my essential list but thought I could improvise. How much does a good one cost as they seem to be of variable quality?
chrissie - thanks...will do a search, just being lazy, but do fear I've already got one of those lists! Actually quite interested in peoples view of what they consider absolutely essential
------------- If you're not on a fell your wasting your feet and for 2014 it's.......Feb Castleton Mar North Yors Moors; Apr Sutton on Sea; May Thirsk; Jun Clapham/Riverside (Lakes); July Wharfedale; August Crakehall; Sept Knaresborough; Oct Wirral Park/Clitheroe
We bought a used caravan from a dealer & they had a couple of "package" deals which included some essentials eg wheel lock, hitch lock which is the one we bought,& another with the aquaroll etc, so might be worth They threw in a y tube free of charge.
Thanks for all the posts so far. Do have starter pack thrown in but it is everything else one could potentially buy... just need to prioritise 'most' essential
In reply to the noseweight gauge the prices can vary but I managed to pick up a reputable second hand one on Ebay for £5.99 inclusive of p&p as I was the only bidder at the time so I actually managed to grab a bargain.
If you go for a noseweight guage, then the Milenco one is very good. Phil's list is a good starting point, but most van's will come supplied with an Electric Hook-up lead. The same is not generally true of a battery. Something not on Phil's list: a small lump hammer and a claw hammer to drive in the awning pegs (claw hammer also useful to get pegs out). A spirit level to help level the van might be useful - fridge won't always work efficiently in the van isn't level.
we always keep a medical box, basic toiletries, cleaning materials, disk cloths, towels/ tee towels. Don't forget toilet rolls and kitchen rolls.
We always keep the 'caravan's own' towels, bedding, cooking utensils, plates cups, glasses etc., perminently in the van.
I always keep spare bulbs, fuses, extension leads/plug bar for the awning. We always take a broom and hand bruch/ dustpan and we keep a small electric hoover in the van too.
Like David our caravan has its own bedding towels toiletries plates cups ect living inside it, so all I need to pack is food and clothes.
Over time you will get to know what you need and what you don't.
Our essentials are nose weight gauge , towing mirrors, gas, hook up leads, levelling blocks ( not fun sleeping on a incline )
Actually looking at David's above, we are the same.

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
Gas to power your cooker and/or fridge. A light of some sort. Something to fetch water in. Something to cook with, something to see by, something to drink from. And towing mirrors!
The above is all I started with! Other things added along the way, most of which mentioned above.
