I have just received a reply on another forum which you may, or may not find interesting.

Having tried every trick in the book, (and I mean every trick) to resurrect an old RM 6402 the experts checking it over fianally gave up.

No one could tell me why the coolant failed to circulate untill I received the following post.

If an absorption fridge is left running for a considerable length of time it may cause the ammonia to overheat turning it from liquid to gas then to solidify preventing the matrix cycle.

What do you think, true or false?

I repair domestic appliances and there are some which have absorption units as opposed to compressors and these are on all the time.

The thermostat switches the unit off and on. If the thermostat was to stick on then on an aborstion unit it would run continuously, as there is no thermal cut-out, in which case, like anything, it would fail

My friend who lives in my caravan has had the same problem. Her van is a 2005 and she lives in it so its running constantly. She was advised by a local dealer recently to remove the fridge and turn it upside down to mix the gases again but this never worked. If it does solidify this would explain why.

Hi Michael

Many thanks for the link which at last has the info I needed, but where did you get the diagram from? Iv'e trid all catagories on the link without success.

I did find something similar on another site but although it gave a working diagram there was little info regarding the cause of failure

Thanks again Logan

Hi Logan, Almost right, it's not the ammonia that's causing the problem, in the mix in the cooling unit is chromate which is there to prevent rust inside the cooling unit, this can crystallise and block some of the smaller bore pipes, you can sometimes clear this by turning the fridge over for a couple of minutes which can clear the blockage, but of course the particles are still in the system and can block again. If the cooling unit is u/s then you can have the cooling unit replaced on some models of Dometic/Electrolux fridges but not Thetford.

Thanks for your input Metz.

Having read the fault diagnosis and the reasons for failure on the link Michael supplied I now have the answer as to why my fridge died.

Regards Logan
