What is the opinion of using a caravan during the winter? Any tips welcome!

We certainly have used ours in winter - snow/frost etc. Sites are available and modern vans are built for it. Freezing water and gas is the obvious problem. Gas is easily overcome by using propane.
Water has never caused us a problem but take your pump in overnight.

Get an insulation jacket for your water barrell. If its going to be really frosty then empty that barrell and take it indoors over night. Always empty the waste water container on a night rather than leave it full to freeze. Leave heating on overnight....then you just have to decide who goes out first thing to fill the water barrell!!!!!

We are toying with the idea of three nights at Burrs from Boxing Day - still haven't made up our minds yet. Hope this thread might help.

Watch out for the black ice on the roadways at Burrs if it's cold, slipping over when going to the facilities is not good!

agree gas kettle is a must,we lost power for 20 hours due a site fault.only use red bottled gas as the blue one could stop gassing if its too cold.

I've been away once for Christmas and have been away for New Year for the last few years.

I agree about emptying the waste water - I had to bring mine home frozen once, fortunately there wasn't a lot in it.

I've got a bag for my fresh water container so I put a circle of bedroll in the bottom, wrapped the container in a duvet(cheapy from B&M for about £6), then wrapped it all up in a survival blanket. Some people use old coats and things and put a sleeve round the hose from the pump.

I also use a small convector heater ticking over very low all night.

Definitely propane, too. I use it all year round.

I'm away for New Year and really looking forward to it.

Go for it - there's nothing more beautiful than a thick frost and -8 degrees in the morning when you're warm and snug in your caravan.

we're away for New Year on a rally and can't wait.  In preparation we have bought an insulation jacket for the water barrel.  We already have the propane gas and gas kettle.  We've just fitted a carbon monoxide alarm as we'll no doubt be using the gas fire over night as we're not on EHU so would rather be safe.  Have also got a porch awning to give the door abit of shelter from the elements and somewhere to store shoes etc.  We've also treated ourselves to a Club body warmer

Our last trip each year is October, and the first February, and we've been caravaning in the snow.  The kids and dog love it.  We normally head south, so not problems with water freezing, even with the snowy conditions one year.

Generally our Feb holiday is in the new forest, and finding navigable dryish walks can be a challenge, best to stick to the footpath walks.

Cant think of anything nicer than finding cosy cafe right on the sea front somewhere and having a hot cup of tea while watching the sea.

Our kids are out doorsy, so we wrap up warm and walk in most weather conditions.

Recomendations, warm slippers, hip flasks, wicky coat for the dog, something to keep the kids happy when its tipping down, hip flask, good warming food, plenty of towels as nowhere to dry them, lots of waterproofs as nowhere to dry them, hip flask, wellies and walking boots.  Always best to remember the hip flask aswell.
