Hi I need to have my chassis checked/serviced (on the caravan, no me personally!LOL) and would like to know:
1. If this can be carried out now. Or would it need to be done in early spring. I don't intend going out in the caravan again until the spring, so would having it checked now be too soon?
2. Does anyone know of a good mobile engineer around Congleton/South cheshire/north Staffs area that would do the job.
You can do the chassis service anytime. If you ain't using 'van until next yr do it then. With an old Alko chassis they will need to clean out & repack wheel bearings & fit new seals, otherwise its just clean/adjust brakes & handbrake & grease hitch nipples. My local bloke charges £70 for chassis service.
Obviously any parts required are extra if brake shoes or anything else needs changing. Service is only required every 2yrs or 3 if your mileage is low.
It is indeedy an old alko chassis, and I've noticed lately (only the last time I came back and parked it) that the handbrake was working, but not as it used to! Got a greasegun and greased the nipples myself. Haven't a clue how to check brakes/bearings though - always a good idea if you want to stop!
Cor - found one just 6 miles away on that second link you put on, Michael! Should I call him now to set up for early spring or leave it until the spring?? Just pondering as it's only the chassis I want doing.
He will be busy in spring so you would need to book early. He might have more time on his hands this time of yr so might do a better job if he ain't rushed. It won't make any difference if you get it done now.

yes book him/her now.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Just a quick update. I had the chassis service done and the man who came out - Mick - was really good. He oiled and greased everything, freed off a corner steady that had been difficult, adjusted the handbrake, balanced the wheel brakes (and said they had really needed doing) checked all the electrics, sorted out the side lights which have never worked properly) and adjusted the bolts and things, and checked the wheels. I was really pleased with the service, and knowing that all the running gear is good for the next season is peace of mind!
For anyone else needing a service in the north staffs/south cheshire area, this service I would recommend! servicing website
Blimey! With service like that, & at such a good price, it's almost worth me towing mine all the way up there to have it done!
Well done you, always good to find a decent tradesman. My dad's an ex-car mechanic & I do a bit myself, so will probably do my own. But, if I found someone like that down here, I would have to seriously think about it.

Hi Matty, yes it was good value for money - he was here approx 1.5 hours doing everything, no extra charges for anything. I thought it was probably easier to get someone to do it all for me - I'm no car mechanic!
If you go to the top of this post, the second link there has all the servicers in all parts of the country - you may be able to find one near you I think. That price is for a van chassis service only, not a habitation check. Well worth it for peace of mind. It's the 'approved workshops' links, from Michael.
