Hello,

As a number of you will already know, i am a product design student and am trying to improve the wastewater container.

Could you answer me a few questions please;

1.) What is the maximum price you would be prepared to pay for an improved wastewater container?

I'm trying to find out the ideal capacity of a wastewater container;

what capacity would you like? (if there was not as much weight on the handle as the wastemaster)

the wastemaster is 38L and the waste hog is 45L

The weight also needs to be manageable for a female user so bear this in mind - or is the wastewater more the man's job?

Thanks for your help

Alex

60l would do me.  That capacity would allow enough time for emptying to fall in with toilet casette intervals.  Bear in  mind that not all sites have a waste drain designed as good as Caravan Club Sites, and an element of lifting is involved.

I would pay in the region of £150 for one that had a third wheel on a leg to take some of the weight and some sort of electric assist motor (similar to golf trolleys)

How about remote control? Empty your waste from the comfort of your sunlounger

I reckon that a substantial weight of container can be handled by either men or women depending upon the balance point. I use a beer barrel trolley which grabs onto the rim. This makes it very easy to manouvre a barrel weighing over 120kg because of the balance point. The problem comes when moving it once at your destination. If you have to lift it to a raised platform or up even a small kerb then anything over 20 kg is going to be tricky( including current containers).
I use a wastemaster and don't really have a problem but wouldn't want it any bigger as it would become too heavy to safely empty. My wife has never emptied the container. It just seems that I do it and don't really mind doing it.

A suggestion to improve the design, would be to install a pump into the container which could work on a float switch, so that on serviced pitches your waste water can be pumped directly out of the waste container. This summer on a serviced pitch, the drain point was actually higher than the outlet on our van?!?!?!
The pump could also be used to empty the tank at a normal waste point, so that the container could be larger and not need to be manhandled.
Not sure it is really such an issue at all though.
Good luck!

Hi

For me it's always my job to deal that kinda stuff and I recon I could go up to 60-70Kg without an issue providing the ballance was right.

I would not want to pay much more than £50 as it is not that much of an inconvenience that I would much go more than the current wastehog I have at present.

The issue would be around weight for me as I like many others I have to watch the load in the Van.  The other issue would be around size, the current one fits nicely into my Toilet/Shower room when in transit and that's where any newer bigger one would have to go.

Regarding design I think that a lot could be done around this height of the waste containers as when you setup on a site that requires the back of my 'van to be lower, I have to use the lower side of the wastehog to allow it to drain.  This means that it never gets full and I have to empty more often.

I Hope this helps.

Cheers

Richard

Has the OP ever been out in a touring caravan. If not then they need to get out as soon as possible and experience it first hand. Perhaps then they can consider a new design.

I am quite new to using internet forums and thought you had to start a new topic for a different discussion - sorry I did not realise you could do it on the same one.

I have actually been in a caravan before to see containers in use, in fact my parents have been in the caravan club for 32 years and I have been holidaying in a caravan for approximately 6 weeks every year since I was born and I am 21.

I know what the problems are, but for the purposes of my report, I have to ask other caravanners for their views and opinions.

The point of this topic was to find out from the consumer what you would be prepared to pay for a container and what capacity you would think would be suitable.

I have to hand my report on this Wednesday so would have appreciated people’s opinions, a lot of people have been very decent on the internet forum and answered questions and I would like to thank those people as you have all been a great help

Alex

Hi Alex.

I would think that 40L is about right for size.and wouldn't really see it as viable if the price was much more than £40-£45.

You may also be considering some of the following points, but I will mention them just in case.

The larger (i.e. larger the capacity) of water container, the less often it will be emptied.  I would tend to consider the impact of 'standing water'.  Leave a water container for too long (depending perhaps on temperature) it could possible tend to smell.  We used to find this on site in France with the wastemaster.

A larger capacity waste water container would bring several other problems.  You may have plans to solve the transportation of the container to the grey water point, but as someone else has pointed out, not all empting points are at ground level, so an alternative 'pump-type' system may have to be deployed to avoid lifting a larger container.

At a time when caravanners are being all that more aware of the weight they carry in the van, the materials used in construction may also need to be addresses to produce a lighter recepticle, although this may appear small issue.  In connection with a larger capacity, one would need to consider the size of the container.  We like to pack out water container away when travelling (i.e. not on the floor of the caravan, so perhaps one needs to consider the size and shape of the container in relation to the size of the bed lockers or front compartment.  At the same time one needs to consider that the container needs to be flat enough to fit under the van (especially if the van is pitched on a sloping pitch where the waste water outlet pipe is close to the ground.

You may wish to ignore this next comment for the purpose of your project as I'm sure it is a question of some debate.  Personally, I can visualize a time when waste water containers and water containers will be less of a vital part of caravanning equipment (but don't know about timescale).  Many more sites are installing pitches with water hookup and grey water drainage, without the need for containers.  At present, the Caravan Club lag behind many commercial sites in producing 'full service' pitches, but I wouldn't mind betting it's only a matter of time.  There was a time when sites had no electric hook up (some still don't) but I wouldn't mind betting that the majority of caravanners use EHU, and I cant think of many (any) caravans that don't have the facility for EHU.  In the future, perhaps we are all going to be looking for smaller water and waste containers, just to use as a 'back-up'.  I know there are a minority of caravanners on here who do not take a waste container with them.  is a larger container really the way to go?

Just a few rambling thoughts, which might help - or not!

Some very valid points there David.
Personally, I would welcome a slightly smaller capacity, maybe 30L? with a lower profile that will fit under the van better than the wastemaster, we usually use the lower inlet because of the outlet height on our van so the extra capacity is wasted.

I would like something similar to what I have presently for fresh water, which is a fiamma 26ltr water carrier which looks rather like a shopping trolley! I presently use a small bucket for waste water and empty it often. I have back problems and cannot carry heavy weights, so something around 10-15 litres, with wheels and a pulling handle would suit me fine!

I am a single lady and travel alone a lot of the time, so ease of transport of waste water would be of particular interest to me.

Edited to add, I would probably pay around £30 for a waste water carrier such as I describe, which is what I paid for the fiamma fresh water carrier.

The only design change that would be a great idea is if there was a sensor that could work remotely (no wiring necessary) with a sensor inside the van to tell me when its near full to avoid it overflowing.

That would be an excellent addition, although it wouldn't tell me when the convoluted hose comes off the end of the waste water outlet. Some improvement to the way the waste container is connected to the van needs looking at, IMHO. I've often thought of using a funnel in the end of the wastemaster instead of convoluted hose.
