Hi

Just bought a caravan! I’m new to this website and new to caravanning and am already feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I thought I should get something that me and the family could ‘practice on’. Consequently we did not spend too much money and bought an 18 year old Swift Challenger.

On the upside the major items (water, gas, electrics) all seem to be functioning okay. The downside is that there are a few things that need attention. I was hoping the more experienced of you out there could help me with some advice on the following:

1. Where can you get Swift spare parts? I’ve had a quick trawl of the Internet but have not turned up much. Specifically I’m after draw handles, the latches for the wardrobe doors, window extenders, and window latches.

2. On of the window frames is damp and rotting. I knew this before I bought it. I’ve taken off the window seal to expose what’s left of the wood. Before I go any further and attempt a repair I was hoping someone could advise me on how the walls of this model are put together. In particular how is the aluminium skin is attached?

3. Does anyone know of a good supplier of general caravan bits and pieces in the Edinburgh and Lothian area?

4. When I jacked up the caravan to get the wheel off I put the front jacks down and then jacked the rear ones until the wheel cleared the ground. I noticed that the front jacking key which is accessible through a hole in the wall trim had risen up beyond the hole by about 1cm indicating relative movement between the floor and wall. Should I be concerned about this? On refitting the wheel and taking the strain off the front jack the key dropped back to line up with the access hole.

I’m sure this will only the first of many posts. If anyone has any advice or tips on Swift Challengers or caravanning in general they will be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Genuine Swift parts are available through Swift dealers although some of the parts you need could well be available from a good caravan accessory shop. Alternatively if you have a caravan scrape yard near you that might be worth a look. The 'Fix-it' Club (part of the forum might be able to answer you more technical questions on the skin. Corner steadies should not be used as a wheel jack, use a suitable jack either of the axle cross beam or on the heavy section of chassis immediately behind the wheel. The floor of the caravan is attached to the chassis so its possible that trying to lift too much weight could have forced the floor away from the chassis in that corner.

Thanks for the tip regarding the jack. Will check this evening to make sure I've not broken anything - as if I don't have enough to fix already.

Considering a number of caravans and campervans you see heading up and down the M90 you’d have thought that there would be loads of dealers in the area but to date I’ve fund very little. The nearest breakers I can find is in Morpeth - bit far for an afternoon out!

Some bits are specifically caravan, others are general DIY. Any caravan dealer will have bits and pieces. Internet is usually cheaper if you need a fair few things. Google for suppliers and see who is best value.

Look on Swift website for your nearest dealer.

For handles, you may struggle to get the same, so you could replace them all......try Ikea, Screwfix, B&Q etc.

Repairs to the wall/window frame are generally done from inside by removing wallboard, you cannot see the extent of the problem without removing it.

Many thanks for the responses.

I’ve moved on the past few days and started to tackle the window problem, see below.

357

I took the curtain down and the pelmet but then came to a stand-still because I can’t see how the ledge that holds the curtain rail is fastened to the wall. It’s well attached and I am concerned about damaging either it or the wall in tiring to get it off. I’m wanting the curtain rail and the cupboard off to get at the panel behind. This photo should make it clear why.

Can anyone suggest how the curtain rail should be removed?

Many thanks
