Just come back from a weeks holiday at Shamba Holidays in St Leonards, Hampshire. I cannot complain about the cleanliness of this site because it was fantastic and most of the staff were ok, however my gripe is with thehusband and wife management of the site who every night that we were there continued to come to our awning and shine a torch through at us telling us to be quiet, and not in a very nice mannert. I would like to state that we were not being noisey, playing a little music not loud and having a quiet drink with my parents who also came with us, my parents being nearly 70. On one occasion we were even told to stop talking which meant we had to whisper to each other. On several occasions I asked my neighbours if we had disturbed them and all of them said that they could not hear us. I have three children who all were sleeping in the caravan and they werent disturbed by us. Come to the end of the holiday we were all fed up and came home early. We didnt feel like we were adults on holiday but children on a school camp being told by the teacher lights out. I do understand that you have to respect your neighbour and this we did, but I felt we were being targeted because we went as a family group ie. myself and husband and 3 kids, my mum and dad and my brother his wife and 2 kids. This is the second time we have been to Shamba and will not return. Note however that when u look at the website they dont say anything about the road noise from the A31 which can be clearly heard day and night. In Easter we went we had a nice time whats changed. In the two weeks alone we have spent over £1200.00 with Shamba holidays as a family but they certainly will not be getting anymore of my money.
I know different people have different standards but absolute silence on a campsite is not reasonable. If you are in a canvas tent/awning you have to expect a reasonable level of low volume talking up to a reasonable hour.
You just can't please any of the people any of the time these days I guess.
You dont mention what time this was ? If it was around 11pm and you were still talking in your awning ,let alone playing music ( all be it quite ) then I can totally understand .although you may think you were being quite ,the fact that the owners could hear you outside ,means that neighbouring tents would be able to hear even if people in vans couldn't .In fact we even find ourselves talking in a whisper even when inside our van after 10ish,even earlier in winter .
That's ridiculous! God, we were at Park Resorts Lower Hyde (Isle of Wight) last week and the three caravans next to us were having a party (we couldn't even hear our radio) and nobody said a flipping word to them!!! One extreme to the other!

It was 10.30pm either side of us were our family who we had gone with, behind us were several tents, we asked them the following morning whether we had disturbed them and they said no, so we couldnt see the problem. We were quiet, after 11pm the music went off but we did sit in the awning chatting, it wasnt so much being asked to be quiet more so the manner in which we were spoken to by the management

Sometimes people are too polite to tell the truth and sometimes they don't want to get involved. I suspect most of us have fibbed to our neighbours at home about whether we've heard them yelling, arguing, or whatever. We're a fairly polite nation.
Personally, I'd have been cheering the wardens going around tents reminding campers of the rules regarding quiet, if you could hear music in the awning it's likely that your neighbours could do, whatever they say. The noise of four or more adults sitting up and talking in an awning will also travel further than I suspect you've realised.
I think talking quietly inside your awning should be fine at any time really. Are they going to suggest that people in tents can't communicate with each other after 11pm? The sound of gentle chatter around the site has never stopped me from sleeping even when we had the tent. I have to say music at 10.30pm even played at a low level would irritate me but thats just me Im not a fan of music playing on a site at any time to be honest and I do like music but we all have different tastes etc but Ive never felt the need to complain about it though
"Musical instruments, audio equipment and similar appliances should be used considerately during the day, and not after 10.00pm. Between the hours of 11.00pm and 7.00am absolute quiet should be observed"

If a site states it wants 'absolute quiet' after 11pm then it clearly means it wants campers in bed by 11pm or just sitting silently with their drinks contemplating their burning candles.
Plenty of people are happy with this & purposely stay on sites with this rule. Those that want to sit up chatting & drinking into the small hours will need to go to site without such a rule.
Fact is a group of adults chatting & drinking alcohol late at night will disturb those around them even with normal conversational levels. The later it gets & the more they drink, the more the noise level rises. Any camper will be familiar with this.
The site rules are clear enough, maybe the owners had tried & failed in the past with the diplomatic approach.

I suspect the clue in the warden's response will be the complaint that the OP was asked to be quiet "every night" of their week's stay.
Can i just say something about this, wouldn't it have been better if u had gone into your van then they would not of heard u that way , that what we do , the other week we reported a family in a tent for playing loud music at midnight im not saying you played loud music , but out in the countryside noise carrys and can be easliy heard by others .

Noise does carry and we have been on the receiving end of people sat in the awning as a group late at night a few years ago.
This site clearly states no music after 10pm and absolute silence after 11pm so I am not sure what your complaint is? It is the wardens' job to enforce the rules and that is all they were doing, surely?
Many sites in that area are not so strict on noise, try somewhere like Sandford Park next time perhaps? They have a clubhouse and plenty of people wandering around late at night talking.
