Hi all, we have took the opportunity to book a long weekend at the Reighton Sands Haven camp, through the CC club for princely sum of £6.00.
Issue is what is the best way there from manchester with a caravan on the back, is it A64 up past York and Malton to a right nr Scarborough, or A64 to York then a right onto the Driffield road into Bridlington and up into Reighton. Cannot decide which may be the better route.
Garrowby Hill (on the A166 Bridlington road) is much steeper and nastier than Whitwell on the A64. I don't know what the road between Scarborough and Brid is like, so I can't offer any opinions on that - no doubt someone will be along soon that knows it well.
To be honest either way would do with a caravan. Driffield Bridlington and up to Filey may have slightly less traffic but Malton Scarborough will be shorter. If you go the Driffield route take the A1079 exit off the A64 York Bypass. Just down the A1079 there are toilets in a layby about a mile from the A64 which may be welcome (just after some traffic lights and on your side of the road). Keep on the A1079 till you come to Shiptonthorpe and turn left at the Little Chef Roundabout. That road takes you to Driffield. This way is better than Stamford Bridge from York as you would have to go up Garrowby Hill that way which is a 1 in 6 at its steepest and I find that there is always a lorry in front so I never do it with my van.
If you use the Malton Scarborough route just after Staxton there is a roundabout at Spital house (camping on your left). Don't turn left to Scarborough but straight on to the A1039 and Flixton - Muston. That road comes out on the A165 and turn Right on to that towards Reighton Sands. There is a new road bypassing Reighton and that may not be on your map. Approaching from this side you come to a roundabout just after an Italian Restaurant (on your right). Turn left here for Reighton Sands. This left turn takes you on to the old road.

This is my home territory, and Phils 2nd option above is the way I would go. The roundabout at Staxton which he mentions is where the road to Filey breaks off from the A64 to the right. Its all clearly signposted but beware of a very sharp turn to the left in Muston village just before the main A165 Scarborough to Brid road, you will probably need to go round it wide and slowly, but dont let that put you off !!
The route down the beach collapsed many years ago. You can still get down but care is needed. Once on the sands they are magnificent. Not far down here to Brid or North to Scarborough for a day out

There are lots of reviews on here about Reighton Sands but I imagine you have read these already.
Of the 3 Haven sites on our bit of coastline, if I had to stay on one it would be Reighton, but we are past the stage of wanting plenty to do for the kids etc and only do small sites now. In any case when we go away in the van the last place would be is on the doorstep !
I'm sure you will find plenty that appeals to you, hope the weather is kind it makes such a difference.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
