From Chesterfield you will presumably be considering heading along the M62 then north via Howden &Driffiield, its ok, Ive done it but its a bit of a rollercoaster and the roads are narrowish but ok, HGVs use it but a more caravan friendly route though a tad longer is north on A1 to the A64 near Bramham then east past Tadcaster York & Malton.
Should have said there aint much difference time wise between Howden to Scarborough & Bramham to Scarborough. One is longer but faster ( via A64 )and the other is shorter but slower.
We where going to travel after work on Wednesday and thought the Tadcaster route would be busy, I work around that area and the A64 around York can crawl at times, this week has been bad due to the steam rally at Pickering, It is about 20 mile or so further I travel up the A1 everymorning to the junction before Tadcaster, I might think I am going to work and come off the A1!!!
B1249 from Driffield to Scarborough is not a problem but be aware of Staxton Hill, stick to a low gear and watch the speed and you should be OK. We go to Scarboro a regularly with the van and have never had a problem.
Travelling down Staxton Hill is no problem if you take care and use a low gear. Travelling up may be a different matter altogether and I avoid going up this hill at all costs. Coming back towards the Humber Bridge, I go via Bridlington.
