Hi all,

Are there any differences towing a twin axle instead of single.... friends have said a twin axle is better....is this true why is it better??

The 85% 'rule' .... from my understanding this is a guideline not a law... do many of you tow a higher ratio.. does it cause any problems, what effect does it have???

Hope these aren't daft questions

Thanks

no question on here is daft...

i have towed both single and twin. assuming each are correctly loaded, then yes a twin is more stable. if you think about it logically there is more rubber on the road providing a more stable contact to the ground. I think there is more to it than that though.

and yes the 85% is guidance...i.e. there is reduced risk of the tail wagging the dog...there is nothing stoping you exceeding this, but obvioulsy your driving style has to be appropriate for the weight you are towing.

I have towed trailers up to 100% of legal max and this maxes for a fun and sometimes uncomfortable ride!

Its probably the up hill areas where you really notice the difference in towing if you exceed the 85% guide. Traffic lights half way up a steep hill, and a hill start, with nearly a 100% match behind and its too late to discover the potential problems.

Heard that reversing with a twin axel is harder than it is with a single, but never tried it myself. Reckon its just a case of getting used to the way to do it - as with anything.

One issue to consider when buying a twin axel is that your latest car designs do seem to be moving towards the lighter versions of the one before so a replacement tow car later on may be a tad more expensive.

Phil

Don't worry about reversing a twin.  There are subtle differences but nothing important.

Spot on I totally agree.
RE the 85% why take risks when it's you, your family and other road users lifes that could be at risk. Be safe and stay alive I say.
