Did you get a good deal ? I,m thinking along the same line's because the difference in pitch prices per night with the C&CC is just over £3 and if your stopping for a 15 nights which we are later in July its saving a few nuggets

I know many will say I'm talking rubbish but it is easy to make a solar panel yourself if you can use a soldering iron. I have now made 3 60w solar panels that are used to charge 2 110ah batteries that feed led lighting in a stable block. You can buy the solar cells off Ebay although its best to source the 'A' grade cells which are slightly more expensive. You can mount the cells on marine ply and then seal the panel with greenhouse perspex. I run the panels through a 20a controller to keep the batteries topped up. I estimate it cost about £1.25 per watt once you have sourced all the materials. I have now been asked to make 5 more panels to be used to power batteries that will power a neighbours electric fence in their grazing fields. ------------- Nigel

I've been tempted by a solar panel for a while. I have a Maplin 13 watt solar brief case that includes a 4 amp regulator. By my reckoning I should be able to connect an 80 watt panel to this regulator. Would that be correct?

LegsDownKettleOn - 4A regulator at 12V =48w
ajturs - just had a look at the kit you ordered and noticed that the regulator was only rated at 6A - A couple of weeks ago at a rally our 55W panel was producing 4.9A - I would have thought that the regulator required for a 100W panel should have been rated at 10A minimum.
I have a 10A controller that can charge 2 batteries at the same time.

4A regulator at 12V =48w . It doesn't quite work out like this , if you look at solar panels on ebay for example and look at the Current at max power (Imp) , this tells you what the amp output of the panel is , and from that you can work out what charge controller you need . atb

Yep, max output voltage is 17.5V and therefore if the panel is rated at 100W the current would be 5.7amps (100/17.5).

No , a 100w panel is a pretty good panel for charging a caravan battery , the info is , what amps panels output and what charge controller they need .

You wouldn't want imo to use a panel of less than 10 watts , if you go much bigger than 10 watts you should use a charge controller .

wizard9956. I understand what you are saying but found this on the Marlec Renewable Energy Solutions website.
"How do I calculate the Amp rating of the regulator needed ? Employ the equation of Amps x Volts = Watts. Therefore an 80W solar panel charging a 12V battery should be regulated using a solar regulator rated 6.7A or more.
My 55W panel (nominal rating) can produce 4.9A into my batteries and I have this connected via a 10A rated controller. Personally I would not consider using a 6A controller with a 100W panel.
