I’m thinking of removing the carpet from our caravan and replacing it with a nice wood effect vinyl floor.
With two young kids, the floor gets dirty very quickly and it’s a nightmare to keep clean.
We have a little hoover, but im thinking more for spillages etc.
Hi there, I have done this with my last 2 caravans and I am currently looking for some for my latest caravan. I have always bought from a local shop who sell roll ends. Their own fitter fitted it for me charged me £25. (i am useless with diy)
I find it so easy to keep it clean. I have a loose mat at kitchen and in between the beds I have a lovely sheepskin. If mats slip on the cushionfloor I use a square of that grippy mesh stuff.
Hi suggett1976 we did our's a few weeks ago, and its the best thing we did, all i need to do is brush it them mop, no more taking the hoover with us, and we had it fitted when we bought the vinyl cost us 70 quid for the lot xx Gill
Glad we put vinyl in ours, dog was sick in doorway last time out.
He did try to get out but door was shut, just mopped up and disinfected the floor.
Easy to fit for me,i am a carpet fitter
Took longer to get the carpet up as it was fastened down with hundreds of small staples, some carpets are put down first before the units so will have to be cut out and may still show when the vinyl is down.Small beading will cover this and any small mistakes in the fitting.Make sure the floor is smooth and clean before you start.
Just done mine too , over the last 30 years the old lino originally fitted and the two layers of carpet on top developed a musty òld house`aroma . As Andy said ,removal of the old is hardest . Lino was glued , next two layers of carpet had hundreds of staples . Relaying was a cinch , a template can be made with heavy paper or light card and the vinyl can be cut before laying . Fix to floor with a spray adhesive or Evostick if you never intend to remove it . Finish all around with quarter round pine if you like . Panel pins will fix this in place . Tools required ; Tape measure , straight edge , strong Stanley type knife , hammer , panel pins , flat screwdriver to pick out all the staples stuck in the floor , somebody to make the tea .
The great thing about vinyl is , if you need to quickly clean it and walk on it , Mr Muscle or similar dries virtually instantly .
Hi, Cut out old carpet If you can, use the old carpet as a template for your vinyl, lay out your viny on (green/driveway) lay old carpet on top, mark out the outline on vinyl, then as suggestions above, leave a bit extra vinyl at all the floor vents on beds suports, and tuck under vent, will look a better job.

If in Doubt Check it Out.
We used sticky back lino tiles from B&Q - they are long just like laminate wood flooring but much lighter and dead easy to put down. We bought a washable carpet runner from Asda for £8 which we have at the sitting end.

I really like this idea as I am not fond of carpet. However would it devalue the van when I come to sell it on, I wondered if perspective buyers would think I was hiding something
Our van has carpets that are like fitted rugs so you can easily remove them to reveal a vinyl floor if its muddy etc outside, maybe this would be a better idea? We just take them out once a year and wash them in the bath!
brilliant idea. We take our carpets out in the summer in any case. We have vinyl down on top of the thin stuff they use originally. Perfect. In the winter we put the carpets back in and have vinyl mats in the relevant places. Thus cleanliness and warmth for the tootsies. The original carpet is useless given its proneness to wandering and therefore rucking up. Swift were their usual helpless self when I wrote to them asking how I could keep my carpet from becoming a travelling willberry.
We once had spare carpet left over from the lounge and asked the fitter to do out the aravan with the leftover piece. Perfect job
we have a bailey ranger which has lino and a loose fitting carpet in beige we have taken this out and stored it in a cupboard at home and put down a couple of runners the ones with rubber backs can be easily swept/hoovered etc we wouldnt want just lino in case something got spilled as my wife and daughter have disabilities and could be slippy but each to their own

I have made a frame out of flat aluminium carpet door strip to go round the trapdoor.
As the carpet went down the edges of the well and was fastened over the edges of the trap door there will be a large gap left so i added some strips of wood around the trap door to make a tight fit and fastened the plate to that so it all lifts out together.
The ali plates stand out quite a bit so i keep trying to think of something else to go round but not come up with anything substantial enough yet.
If you have not taken the carpet up yet it is fastened with hundreds of small staples, especially around the well and trap door.
If you do put new carpet down don't forget the carpet goes down the sides of the well so the piece left will not fit the trap door as this goes under the edges and holds it in place.
Think this is why i would be better using carpet. Will make a better feinish if I copy how last one was done rather than trying to make a nice finish round the trap door with lino
