Past a caravan on the A1M about 12ish today between the Durham & Darlington turn off going south seem to have had bit of a bump front right side hope everyone was O.K
Hi, What kind of damage, If being towed by the owners car, could have had damage setting up, or becoming detached from tow car,and running into rear of car, have saw a few vans on M6 and A1 that were involved in some kind of accident, the worst i saw 5years ago was a caravan travelling north M6,car and van on left hand verge facing south half way up the bank, all the occupants standing up on the bank in total shock, all that was left of the poor blokes van was the chassis and floor, everything else was match wood.never did hear what happened.

I've seen a few of caravans and vehicles off the road, the strangest one I spotted wasn't a caravan, it was a v large trailer on the side of the M5 between Bristol and Brum a few years ago, the trailer had managed to throw the car on top of it, still upright, still with the twisted A Framed attached to the back of the car. Scary.
You really have to feel sorry for people who have done everything to avoid this kind of accident, hope I'm never one of them. But you do see some people towing at 80, caravan swinging away and bouncing around behind them.
I was following an outfit on northbound A1 a couple of years ago when the van separated from the car in front of me,the van veered off to the left and ran about a 100 yards into a field without doing any apparent damage and the car just caried on without noticing that the van had separated I had to stop the driver about 1/2 a mile up the road he said he had travelled up from Cambridge without any problems.Ian
I have no idear how it was possible the tow ball looked ok when I stopped the car it was a volvo estate quite new the wireing plugs hsd been ripped out but no damage to the car never did find out how or why but it always made me check mine twice just to make sure.Ian
I followed a caravan up the A1 yesterday coming back from Bawtry, it was really lopsided, looked like the caravan had a puncture,,,, and very very unsteady, all over the carriageway,,but it remained travelling at around 55, we turned off shortly after spotting it,,,,hope they stopped ?? .

What sort of dolly daydreamer could carry on driving for half a mile without noticing that his caravan wasn't on the back??? I would have thought that was impossible!
I have never understood those people who say, when towing "wouldn't even know it was on the back"
I understand now , probably because it wasn't!!! How can they not see their vans gone.
Caravanners in the main are aware of the 60 mph law but what bothers me are other trailer tow-ers ie trailer tents, boats, box trailers etc - anything other than a caravan - which get towed at colossal speeds.
I can only think these people believe that the 60 mph is only for caravanners.
Am I right in thinking that the 60 mph law is for everyone towing irrespective of what they are towing?
yup as soon as you put a trailer of any sort behind your car you're resticted to 60 on duel carrage ways and motor ways and 50 on single carrage ways .
Hi, The guy on A1 that did'nt notice that his van had gone. What kind of driver is he, if he cant see the big white thing that he was towing had gone, make you think what else is he not observing on the road, a child maybe? it obvious he did not use his mirrors or towing mirrors if he had any. dont think he is fit to drive a little shopping scooter, let alone hold a licence.
