Feeling your pain GT60. That's how much we paid last year, just waiting to see if it's gone up since then, Grrr! Ours is going in the end of the month. God knows what they do so they can charge that. Last year we completely emptied it to make it easier for them. Still cost the same though.

Just get a chassis service, ie take off wheels/hubs check/adjust brakes, handbrake. My caravan service place charges £70 for this. The interior you can do yourself, all the service does is check everything is working. Any work required is chargable extra.

No doubt folk will mention gas & 240v electrics safety but if you are practical enough to understand how it all works you will know if anything is or looks wrong.

Thanks for that but i have decided to stick with discover after reading some threads on another site.

It has made me realise that i am getting the best service as they bend over backwards for me and they got the message that they DO NOT tell me when i can drop off and collect the van i tell them. they tried it once

I just go for the chassis service. We look after the inside ourselves. As for making sure the gas is safe - do you have your kitchen gas cooker serviced?

If you have up to date monitors & alarms Carbon monoxide etc. What could possibly go wrong?

If you are in a rented accomodation then the landlord must have the gas and electrics tested annually. The other reason why it is more important to get the gas appliances in a caravan checked than it is at home is that a caravan moves and therefore there is a much greater chance of a pipe fracturing. Also, LPG is heavier than air and a caravan is a lot more confined than a house, so LPG can fill the caravan from the floor up quite quickly if there is a leak without there necessarily being a noticeable smell. This is why the gas check on a caravan is more involved than it is in the house as the system is pressure tested. A domestic gas system is only tested at mains gas pressure.

I am not condemnig any one for saving a few pounds, but if you don't know what exacly you are neglecting then I feel a duty to explain it and the risks involved.

There is no statutory obligation on landlords or agents to have professional checks carried out on the electrical system or appliances.
It is recommended that a full electrical test is carried out at 5 year intervals or on change of tenant.
An annual gas check is a statutory obligation.

Here is the list of what the dealer is supposed to "check" in a service. Personally speaking I think I paid £185 to take my van to the dealers and tow it home again. I can list at least 10 items on this list that I know weren't checked, fixed or investigated.

So how do we know whether we are getting fleeced or not?

1. Damp and lamination test.

2. Coupling head and

breakaway cable.

3. Jockey wheel.

4. Chassis and chassis to

body security.

5. Corner steadies.

6. Tyres and tyre pressures.

7. Torque wheel nuts.

8. Brake rods and linkages.

9. Hub bearings, brakes and

brake shoes.

10. Handbrake operation

and performance.

11. Suspension and shock

absorbers (if fitted).

12. 13 pin plug and cables.

13. Road lights, wiring

and reflectors.

14. Internal lights and

12V DC system.

15. Water heater - gas and 230V AC

(if fitted).

16. Hob, grill and oven (if fitted).

17. Refrigerator 230V AC, 12V DC

and gas.

18. Gas system.

19. Water pump, taps and

water system.

20. Mains 230V AC system.

21. Windows and fittings.

22. Smoke alarm and battery.

23. Roof lights.

24. Furniture hinges/stays etc.

25. Exterior locks and hinges.

26. Grab handle security.

27. All internal vents.

28. Oil seals.

29. Blinds and fly screens (if fitted).

Most items on your list are observations and require no work.  We are being ripped off as usual.  If you want to maintain your waranty you have to pay--ripped off again!!

First service on my van next month , been told it is £205 plus any parts.  Full service and MOT on my 4x4--£160!  says it all.

Brian
