I live on South Tyneside and am booked on Luss CCC site Loch Lomond next week and note I can do the journey by either of several routes.
1. drive across A69 and then up A/M74 to Glasgow area and around to LL.
2. drive up A1 via Tyne Tunnel then A1/A1M to edinburgh then over to Glasgow and LL
3. drive up A1 via Tyne Tunnel then A697 Coldstream and then Edinburgh onto Glasgow.
Although route 3 looks more direct and 2 a little better than 2, I am swaying on using route 1 as my preference.
Does anyone have any thoughts on my plans. Also I have been told that at lauder on route 3 there is a CCC site and was thinking I could break the journey by staying overnight there. Sounds far less hassle than trying to drive/tow for around 5 hours in one go.

Hi Kevinbfg, If you are going the M74 take it to J4 then take slip road to M73(Stirling) carry on for approx,1/2 and take the slip road to M8 that will take you through away from City Centre, carry on M8 heading for Greenock at J30 take M898 to Dumbarton over the Erskin Bridge(not toll) as you come off bridge stay in left hand lane to you will be on the A82 that will take you to Luss. (In Dumbarton you will come through aroundabout then on to a set of traffic lights, Y juntion, take right hand fork, Both roads take you to Luss (L/Hand one takes you into the town).
If you go the A1 Edinburgh route take M8 from Edinburgh right through to J4 then over Erskin bridge onto the A8 (Luss only 20min drive from Dumbarton).
Not sure about your other proposed route. But hope this is of help.

Route one for me there is a "cs" at the lead mine turning on the M 74( Elvanfoot or Abington can't remember which one ) or you can just camp at the road side on the B797 Manock pass with the sheep for company ( see my gallery pic)
Two and Three have speed camerason the A1 further up the traffic at the tunnel is POOH! then you have the A720 and the M8 etc (you will need a holiday after this lot)
Hi, Campsite at Moffat just off M74, and a few minutes walk to the town, pubs, cafes, resturants, or you could take the B7078 that runs along side the M74 and use the areas at side of road for over night stop,(some places have large graviled area used by lorrys) after stop over carry on up the B7080 to Elvanfoot and re join the M74.

We live near durham and go to the west of scotland via your route no.1
it's not a bad run really, we do durham to loch lomond in one go with a tea stop and leg stretch at Arnadale Water services and have never felt the need to break the journey overnight.
we also have done this route several times, also in 1 go with a dog walk stop on m74.does arnadale water services have the caravan parking bays,if yes thats where we stop .
Take route 1 and use the Erskine Bridge as 'jhsw' has suggested as the A82 Great Western Road to Dumbarton is in a bad condition after the winter.......I've had to use it every day for the last month going into Glasgow.

Thanks everyone....will use my route 1 as this seems to be the one favoured. Also thanks John for the clear directions on how to get to the site.
Really looking forward to it (chickened off last year as we had booked in July and found out it was peak midge season!!)

Hi Kevin, Post on here a few days ago about the midges, Avon products think it was an oil lotion, very good for keeping them a bay, will look back to see if can find it and post here.

Hi jhsw (John)....Have just ordered some Skin so Soft from a seller on ebay. Thanks for the tip...Apparently forecast is with the severe winter (was it really that bad?) the midges will be "biting fit" this year and start even earlier!
If Skin so soft is good enough for the marines at the Scottish naval bases then that's the one to use!
