Way too short on info for us to be too helpful I'm afraid! Not even a caravan model/year we can figure out set up for ourselves. - ALWAYS helpful to complete outfit type in your profile info, or at least mention in post.
Is it an external pump immersed in the aquaroll? And which type/brand, as the electrical contacts are different. Several different types/brands used over the years.
Or is it just a pick up pipe feeding an internal (to the van) pump?
Top of my head it sounds very much like corrosion on the pump contacts in the connector plug. It could also be something broken that is causing incorrect connection on the contacts. Both could be made to 'work' temporarily by disturbing the connector. Does the pump start running when you disturb the connector?
Another option for internal pumps is where the connector seal has failed and the pump is drawing in air. You should hear the pump running continuously.
If you don't know the details of your installation, photos work well, we know the various types on sight.
My caravan is a bailey senator 2008 model I have a whale system internal pump drawing water in from aquaroll via tube that plugs in to caravan. Sometimes the water will not pump in pump is running but when I mess with the pipe inside caravan that's connected to the plug on side of van water starts running. I thought would it make a difference if I changed socket on side of van that the pipes connect to any ideas please.
It could be one of two scenarios, electrical, (bad connections) or from your description that the pump sometimes runs but no water flows, (air lock or air getting into the system preventing the pump from sucking up water).
There are a number of causes for air getting in, missing, split or worn o-rings, or a split in any of the pipework components. As you mention if you fiddle with the pipe connecting to the socket it sometimes works, I would examine that area very closely for a split.

Sometime the pipe can turn up in the aquaroll and draw air, the usual way around this was to put the pickup pipe into a bit of rigid pipe as use in plumbing.
The ones with the internal pump had a small filter on the end of the pipe which went in the aquaroll. We had a Bailey with the same setup, I found putting it a piece of rigid tubing helped. I think the filter used to float a bit and stop working.

Sounds like bad contact, the pins can be gently expanded to fit tighter, also a squirt of wd40 can help. Positioning of the drum can make a difference so the hose hangs easily in the hole and not stretched or bent too sharply.
Hope this is useful to someone.
