hiya, does anyone know of an online route planner that has a caravan friendly option as were going away in a few weeks and the sat nav and aa is trying to take us up sutten bank!!
There is a michelin one i use sometimes it has the option of putting in car & caravan under the more options button thats at the bottom of the options bit, hope that makes sense.... link here...
As you are heading up Sutton Bank you must coming East - Brid or Scarborough or Pickering etc. Tell me where from and to and I can give you a bit of advice.

DH has a fair idea where to go but just needs to make sure a hundren times before lol
was for future use as well as i would come in handy to hasve one to look at x
That option on the viaMichelin site just alters the driving times, allowing for your slower speed.
There is nothing that can do this because none of the maps record gradients, road widths etc. Without that info for every metre of every road, no routing software can hope to get you round obstacles like that.
I'd be interested to see if anyone with that supposed caravan-friendly sat-nav (Snooper? Ventura?) can test that out and see what happens - bet it also takes you up there as well.

Hi, just go fastest route with satnav settings,if still takes you Sutton Bank, use the way points funtion,or try Find alternative route, after satnav calculates the route, and it take you Sutton Bank. way points in tomtom and custom roads in garmin satnav, may be best. hope this helps.

The only reason i suggested viamichelin is i used it earlier today because i am going away friday to a cc site near tauton somerset then saturday moving to another cc site nearby & RAC route planner wanted to take me down alot of b roads but the viamichelin one with the car & caravan option ticked used a different longer route with more major roads.
cheers eddy & co

if your in the rac or aa phone them for a route that is caravan friendly and they will send you a print out or possibly an e mail of route to take but phone rather than use online route planner

I have a real bee in my bonnet about route finders and Sutton Bank --- do none of them take into consideration the NO CARAVANS signs outside of Thirsk, surely this is an indication even to an idiot that the A170 is not a good idea ...... It really is time a caravan oriented route finder appeared -think of the sales it would make!
Definatly not the RAC route planner, one caravanner we met on a north Wales CL had used it and found himself towing through the ancient Conwy town walls, which means an encounter with what was once the narrow drawbridges over the moat, a nightmare for even the most experianced of Caravanners, as the busy town traffic often refuses to wait whilst you 'centre up' and doesnt give way at the mini island which is two way traffic.
Also for anyone with a TomTom One sat nav, although they are usually ok when set to follow the fastest routes via A roads and Motorways, once youcross over into North Lincolnshire and around the M180/A180 the nice talking lady starts to go demented, and cannot tell her docks from her farmland, then keeps repeating 'turn around when possible'!
Not funny when your driving on narrow country lanes, and your only option is a very tight mini-island in the middle of a small remote village that shes sent you to. We switched her off in the end and followed our nose with the help of a very good Collins large scale map book, 3miles to the inch in old money which suits us fine.
