Hi there! Just a quick question. I have a calorlite propane 6kg size bottle and weighed it yesterday to see how much gas is left in the bottle, it doesn't have an indicator.

It weighs approx 5kg now, according to my suitcase scales. Does this mean it's nearly empty? I've searched the forums but can't find the answer, but I remember back last year someone posted about how to weigh your cylander and you could calculate how much gas there was left in it. I've been on the calorlite site, but it doesn't mention how to calculate this.

I want to know if I need to buy another before I go off somewhere!

Thanks for any replies. Jax :)

I though all the new calorlite bottles come fitted with a guage.  Mine does - it has a green/red dial with a pointer, although someone on here said that when it goes to red it really means run out is almost immediate!! (or words to that effect!)

I did find this snip of information, which may or may not be of any use:

"Calor’s 5kg and 13kg Patio Gas® cylinders and the Calor Lite® are fitted with Calor's new Gastrac® - an indicator which tells you when you are running low on gas.

For all other cylinders, the empty tare weight can be found on a metal disc on the shroud, this gives the weight of the cylinder in pounds and ounces. To convert this to kilograms multiply this number by 0.453592. Once you have the empty weight of the cylinder you can put it on some scales, then you will have the total weight, so you can now take the empty cylinder weight off the total, this will give you how much gas you have left in the cylinder." - from http://www.calor.co.uk/customer-services/faqs/general-cylinder-queries/

Have had our calorlite 6kg for 20 months - just use it for cooking.  Still pointing to the green.  I guess about 80 nights - could be more though!

It would be better I think to get another one before I go away if there's a chance that it might run out, as they are far more expensive when on sites/away somewhere than at my local gas suppliers.

Where is the 'shroud' then? I could perhaps work it out from there.

The empty weight is on the disc around the neck of the bottle, as DSB says this is in imperial weights (Why this is imperial when the size of bottle is in metric i don't know) so you need to convert it.

When i have weighed mine it is nearly 4 kgs empty.

So does that mean you have two kgs left? I.e., one third left?

Sorry to be so thick, I'm 'number-lexic'!

Your 6Kg cylinder of calorlite weighs 10Kg. Cylinder (not bottle!) weighs 4kg on its own so you have 1 Kg of gas left. How long that lasts is anybody's guess. Depends what you do with it. We always carry two cylinders so we change only when it is properly empty.

The guage is naff. Its on green all the time until just before it runs out and then it suddenly drops down to empty.

Phil

The 6kg marked on the bottle relates to the weight of the gas only.

therefore a full bottle will weigh 4kgs (aprox) bottle weight plus 6kgs of gas giving a total of 10kgs.

so when you weigh your bottle take 4kgs approx from your total weight and the remaining figure is how much gas you have left.

Sorry its easier to do than explain.

Thanks guys! So I have approx 1/4 of a bottle left, so I'd better get another one. I hope they'll exchange an different cylander for it (although I'm not hopeful!), going to phone tomorrow and see.

We exchanged a small 4.5kg? cylander for a calor lite at the weekend.  No problem at all.

Like you, we don't want to run out when away, and thought our existing calor lite felt empty, but the green light is still showing.  Will have to get the scales out to check it.

Do the stick on indicators work on calor lite? and are they any more reliable than the green/red guage?
